This must've made a big BOOM

I woke up this morning after our little "ice storm" down south, and on the way into town came across this big fella laying in one of the 4-way stops. I always thought this tree and the one next to it were pretty neat because of how big they were, easily 60"+ DBH. I guess this one couldn't take the ice load, I'm just glad it didn't fall the other way onto the sorority house in the background. Too bad I'm at college, or id have some of this oak stacked out back already

Although I'm not sure how comfortable I'd feel once I got into the heart of it, you can see the splintered limbs and I'm sure there's a LOT of energy stored in this thing. Hopefully the county crews can get it cut up without incident

Just thought you guys would be interested in seeing this monster. I thought the shot of the rootball was neat

Me too, the hole from the rootball is surprisingly shallow

Maybe thats why it fell down

It is generally true that trees have as much below the ground as they do above. There may still be a lot of this trees root system in the ground

And I would, but I'm about 2 hours from home.

Pretty sure it's an oak. The whole block smelled like red oak/vinegar from all those split open branches

Yeah I wouldn't go too far into it with my equipment. You'd need some big toys to take this monster on

Drove by it on the way home today, and there were quite a few guys there filling their tricks. Looks like the county just let them go at it instead of sending in their crews
