Just installed a Harman P43, need to finish my exterior venting and then she'll be ready to burn. I'm considering adding the optional heat shields for extra peace of mind but I can't find them anywhere. Are there any online retailers that sell the shields, or is this an item that has to be special ordered through a dealer?

I have heat shields installed on my newly installed P68 and got them directly from my dealer. I was a bit concerned that they would look odd. No concerns at all with that. You can't even tell they're not a part of the stove. It looks like all one unit. I'm very pleased with the seamless look.

Good to hear, they do look very nice from the pictures I've seen. It sounds like my only option for purchasing is through the dealer.

+1 Got them from the dealer for my 38 and 68.
Very seamless looking. A must have if you use minimum clearances and/or you have little ones in the house.

I found your forum thread from a while back showing pics of the shields, they look great! I'm actually about 15" from the walls (corner install) so I'm well beyond the minimum requirements but wife and I would like some additional peace of mind.

Thanks. I can't remember what I paid for them but it may be in that thread. $72 kinda rings a bell...or maybe that was for the P68.

You'll need a 3/8 (I think) wrench for installation. Very easy install. Just make sure you don't back the screw out too far or scratch things up holding them while you're wrenching.

I use a very basic, mission style fireplace screen for the front, if you wanted to address that area as well. $20-30 at the Depot.

Not sure that they really provide much protection for the little ones. I have a two year old girl, so I did ask my dealer about that. He told me that the sides still get very hot. It hasn't been terribly cold here, so I really haven't had my stove much past the number 1 dial on Stove temp. At that setting, you can feel the heat through the shields, but probably wouldn't burn yourself. That said, I suspect that if the dial were turned up to about 5, you probably wouldn't want to go near the stove...with or without the shields.

Obviously, you wouldn't want your child touching the stove with the shields in place, but without them it's gonna be a guaranteed trip to the ER, and likely several follow up visits to a specialist. Something horrible you'll NEVER forget. With the shields in place, and the stove on high, it'll likely be a good little burn and very traumatic event for all, but NOTHING like if it was the bare stove.

If I can find my IR temp gun, I'll take some readings next time my stove is cranking along.

If you wanna get fancy, you can tape some water heater insulation to the inside of the shield. You'll lose a lot of radiant heat, but probably reduce the burn factor to zero.

What is the corner install min? My book (p43) kind of contradicts itself. It says in fig 3'. 9" with or without side shields. Then in fine print in the corner it says "clearance shown as 9" with optional side shields installed"
Well if it's 9" with or without what the hell does it matter if the shields are installed?

Here's what is in the P68 manual.

That's weird. I'm 99.9% sure my P38 was also 9" and 13". Who knows, maybe the clearances changed. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if it is a printing error on Harmans part. There's a few errors on there website and brochures as well.

Just looked in the brochure, p38 and p43 are 9"...all others are 9"/13" like you said. I thought they were all the same and was curious why people were saying 13"...that answers that I guess

I think you're correct. It must have always been that way. Hmm, I may have to start hitting the sauce again ;)

I believe the P68 manual states 9" with the shields and 13" without them.

Got my heat shields for free from my dealer. Abridged version of story goes, dealer sold me ember only rated hearth pad, contracted out the installation, I informed them about the thermal hearth pad requirement, they sent someone out to replace hearth pad who put stove back an inch too close to wall, I informed them of drywall getting extremely hot due to stove location, they gave me free heat shields. Decent customer service but dang, get your chit right and understand the stoves you sell!!! I have other issues with this dealer but not related to the topic at hand.

I noticed the same thing, brand new install manual says 9" with or without shields. I have a hard time believing that because the shields must add some kind of protection. Glad I went the extra distance from the walls to begin with.

That shield by northern tool is interesting looking but kind of ugly in my opinion and won't work because I vent straight out the back. It does look like http://www.stove-parts-unlimited.com carries what I want though, thanks for the link. Anyone order from these guys before?

I'll concede to your wisdom on this one, Enigma869. While I've never seen my stove burn full throttle for longer than 20 min or so (other than the paint curing session), last night my stove needed to recover from an intentional hopper draining. The stove was off for about 5 hours. It ran for about 2 hours on full throttle to get things back up to temp.

While this is a rare occurrence, I don't think it would've been much cooler after say only 20 min on high. This is the surface temp of the heat shield, near the top. Ya, OUCH!

The bottom was significantly cooler, but still rippin hot. I'll take a few more readings of the temps during "normal" operation in my situation.
