on one of the coldest days of the year, my neighbor 3 doors down from me decided to set his house ablaze. you'll never guess what started the fire. any takers? this is a big house, twice the size of mine and i'm at 2500 square feet. the fire started in the roof line and traveled up the pitched roof and that was all it took. the chimney was that old gray double wall stuff and probably rusted at the roof line. with all the snow we've had the roof, which is metal, has now caved in all the way. there is something to be said for regular cleanings and yearly inspections.

Green wood?

my guess is they never had the chimney inspected. by the looks of it, it's really old. maybe 70's vintage. my old house had that stuff. i'm not seeing any outside indications of a chimney fire, but who knows. from what the neighbors tell me they caused a lot of trouble around here and they won't be missed.

Anything to offer other than speculation and gossip?

I'll guess!

Sounds like arson.

Or perhaps raccoons that chewed through wiring in the attic.

Or maybe a kitchen fire?

fire marshall ruled it as "defective wood stove" but never really said anything further.
