Check and see if any dealers have kiln dried, I got my first cord of it this fall, kind of $$$ but burns good if mixed with air dried. It works for us city folk with little room to store wood.

I was watching Alaskas Last Frontier on tv before, they said they had 1 days wood left, so they went outside, dropped a fir, they were good to go.....
I saw that one too.

I am hoping for more cold. I need to burn everything stacked outside the basement door,,or I'll have to pick it up and move it back out to the big stacks. I don't like moving it twice. Come on snow!

You may be right, but I really think we need to get those guys on here and educate them! !!!:);)
Well, when they show 'the Homestead', Ottos place. His chimney is right next to the ridgeline, middle of house, a few feet up...But Otto would be the one in the lot to care.

Kevin, the X 27 is the big one (36" handle). I considered getting the shorter handle, but after reading some of the reviews it seemed like most people recommended the big model for splitting. I'm eager to give it a work out when it gets here soon!
Yes nick you are right, I like the smaller one as I am 5 ft 4 so the handle is just right for me. It goes through most stuff for me and then ther is the speeco 35 te for backup - lol.

Gonna start on next year this weekend. Even talked my way into a new Stihl 271 after burning up two others. Can't wait

Had 4 cord of 2-3 year seasoned for this year and another 4 set aside for next year . Plus round 4cord of rock maple that was cut two years ago and split/stacked last spring . Am on the tail end of the first 4 cord . And that is with burning HT pallets . Will have to break into next seasons before its over . On the plus side is that I saved about $1200 so far in oil and house is 5-10 degrees warmer than running the furnace.

I've got less than a 1/2 cord in one half of my shed....that's all that's left for this year. I do have about 3.5 cord in the other side of it.....I burn one half and keep next years wood in the other half....I can go there at least if I need to but don't want to. I've started just burning my little jotul to cut down on the wood. of course, the past few days I haven't needed anything going during the day. weathers crazy.

I am running really low--it is not the snow--it is the cold. Single digits at night all this week coming up. I bought a pallet of bio bricks earlier in the year and I am mixing it half and half with the wood. Without the bio bricks I would not have made it. They burn pretty well and last a long time--five hours anyway.

I started burning too late in the year to save too much but so far I'm at 350. I'm total electric so next year ought to b stellar. Wood heat is so much warmer than electric.

Well , temps have yet to give me a break so have broken into the maple I stacked for year after next . Only skipped next years stacks because the maple I cut/split is nice big rounds and at 18% average . Needed the longer burn times from big splits since we have been below average temps since November . Single digits and below has killed my wood stacks .

Guess I need to add about 25-35% more to my yearly piles . Worst that can happen is that I have more seasoned to carry over .

This has certainly been a long cold winter. I'm gonna see about having 6 cord for next year probably more to get my pile built up and thoroughly seasoned for when I get an EPA stove

Yeah, I hear you on increasing your annual budget for wood. I now budget 4 cords per winter. My original estimate was 3. I just hope this isn't the new standard for winter. If this is the result of climate change then they gotta stop using the term "global warming."

Local weather isn't climate. It's just about the warmest winter temp on record in Alaska.

This is the kind of winter I remember as a kid - long, cold and lots of snow. According to the almanac, this winter is more of a traditional winter for us here in Canada :)

I get that. Really. I do not mean to down play the concept of climate change. I have been regularly checking Alaskan temps this winter recognizing weirdness of my region having a colder winter than theirs. I'm just saying a lot of people experiencing the coldest/snowiest winter we can remember, and kinda chuckle at the phrase "global warming."

I think I know where they can find there cold weather if they want it back!:)

I prefer climate change because we are somewhat uncertain about the outcome of this grand experiment on our little blue planet. Still, the term is self-explanatory with its first word being global. Europe has set several high temp records during this winter as has South America. The winter that NY is having reminds me of the winters when I was growing up there. We had lots of snow and cold weather back in the 50s and 60s.

Climate change has occurred for millions of years. We, humans, are occupying earth in just a spec of time. In fact, we are living here between ice ages.

God gives and God takes, we just have to live with what He decides......

I gotta agree with tfdchief. It's part of the planets history to have xtreme weather changes in a cycle of however many years ( I'm not a scientist ) . But this winter is more like what we used to see when I was young too. Better get to whacking and stacking the cord wood gotta be more to come

Yep, in our little spec in time that we occupy this earth, the best thing we can do is c/s/s fire wood.:;lol:ZZZ

Climate change is a silly term because earth's climate has never been and never will be in any other state - well, that is until it's a dead rock with no atmosphere some day in the distant future. How much do humans and our activities affect climate? Unknown. Can we live in an environment and not affect it? No. I think people who claim with certainty we're harming our poor planet are foolish. Equally foolish are those that argue with certainty that we are not. We still can't accurately forecast local weather more than 2-3 days out. So we just don't know. Will 6 billion plus people ever agree on where to draw the lines? My guess is no. Will the 300+ million in this country alone agree? No.

Has my rant added anything useful to this thread? Clearly, no <>

Rant, maybe. But fact is, I think you have nailed it. Yes humans are affecting our planet. Could we do better. Probably, but the bottom line is, we humans, aren't willing to give up what most affects our planet. I don't know if that is right or wrong. I could live with out all of the modern conveniences that affect our planet. I really like the simply things of life. The Amish do, or some of them, lol, But it would be hard in today's world to live without all of this stuff while everyone around you is enjoying it. I am not sure my wife would go with me there either. ;)
