I've been considering buying a Vermont Castings Merrimack, but I've heard lots of rumblings on build quality on new VC products, so I've been looking for some alternatives. I'm having trouble finding other inserts that meet my requirements however.

1. Output: It needs to be able to provide the lion's share of the heat 2,000 sq ft home that has average insulation, a very open layout, and in a area that frequently has daytime highs below 0.

2. Physical size: The fireplace its going into is 44" x 32". The surround needs to cover the whole space without leaving gaps on the top or sides. I also want the stove to be large so I don't have the odd look of the tiny stove in a giant surround and to maximize burn time, so I'm hoping to find something else in the 3+ cu ft. firebox range.

3. Appearance: The real toughie. The lady of the house has forbidden the flat steel design of most wood stoves. All other stoves I've found that meet the first two requirements fall flat here.

Are there any other inserts I should be looking at, or go with the VC and hope for the best?

So far this sounds like a job for the Jotul C550. Width and height at the back of the fireplace plus depth are necessary measurements. Also, are there any side or mantel clearance issues?

28" deep, 36" wide 16" tall in the back wall. Its steeply pitched however so 24" back its more than 24" tall. Even the largest inserts I've found so far would fit with ease. There's no mantel or side clearance issues.

+1 on the Jotul C550 that is what we ended up with after looking at the Merrimack. Very happy with the decision

You might want to see what Lopi has to offer...

The Jotul 550 is remarkably small for a "large" insert. Rated @65,000 BTU for heating a max of 1800 SF. It simply does not stand up to the true 3.0 CF inserts. It doesn't even stand up to PE's 2.1SF insert.

That is going to be a tough one, from what I am reading I would stick a cast or soapstone free standing rear vent into that fireplace and call it a day. I think you will get brownie points from the wife on the looks.

Stove BTU ratings are ambiguous. Jotul may be listing the EPA test rating and not the max. IIRC the Summit is rated about 63K btus for this test.

i'm happy with my Jotul 550, and my wife is too (she had the same concerns as yours).

I just contacted the nearest Jotul dealer to get more info on the 550 since Jotul doesn't list much on their site. The firebox is only 2.08 cu ft which has me concerned. I have a Lopi Answer in my enclosed porch with a 1.6 cu ft firebox, and I suspect the extra .5 cu ft over that won't cut it.

I'm strongly considering the Avalon Large Flush Hybrid-Fyre. Same unit as the Lopi version with a different front face as far as I can tell. Any thoughts?
