Finally took the plunge and bought a quad classic! Wow made a great choice thanks to all the help and infgo on this forum
so here is my problem: I replaced a propane fireplace insert in my living room. Across from my new pellet stove on the opposite wall is the thermostat for my propane furnace. I bought a remote thermostat with the pellet stove.
When I run just the pellet stove the basement stays really cold because the house thermostat never comes on and the heat generated by the pellet stove never gets downstaires, it goes up to the second floor bedrooms...hot air rises...right? If I turn the house thermostat up to heat the basement the pellet stove won't come on..
It appears that without putting a fan on the stairs to the basement there is no way to set the thermostats that they don't cancil each other out.
Am I in trouble or just looking at this wrong?
Any suggestions?

Pretty much ya need to tell us why you need to heat the basement?

I experience the same thing. I do have a propane fireplace in my basement room that I turn on to heat when I'm down there. About the only thing you can so is get some kind of heating appliance for the basement.

Relocate the propane thermostat?

Moving the propane thermostat to the basement should solve your issue.

Then his propane heater would run at the same time as his pellet stove!

I agree that you either live with the cold down there or get some other heat source for down there. For me, I installed a wood/coal cook stove when it gets REALLY cold or for the inevitable end of the world scenario under current regimes.

Nice looking install on the wood stove TJ.
Our basement area is the tv room, computer work area, etc.
I think I will try just using the pellet for those 30 degree days and keep the propane off...see if the cold is really bad downstairs or if its do-able.
If not I will move the thermostat downstairs and use some propane...its' small sq ft compare to the rest of the house.
Running on just pellets today .. 30°...and was even able to shut down the propane furnace for the upstairs bedrooms (I have two propane furnaces, one for the main floor/basement and one for the upstairs bedrooms).
Wow..lovin this not using propane!!

The out the door price for everything was around $3,600 and we are 70 miles from the dealer...got a ton of free pellets and an ash vac to boot!
I figure even with 50% use the payback will be 2-3 years and thats' if prices don't raise again...ha!
We were at $2.20/gal monday down from $4.85 three weeks ago.

Thanks for all the input!!

Wow, what a drop in propane cost! Makes you want to have a huge underground tank and fill up only when it's low. Kind of like the stock market, though. 'Will it go lower.......?" :)

Wouldn't your propane and pellet stove be fighting each other to meet their setpoints if you moved the propane thermostat downstairs? Or do you have zoned heat so you just heat the basement? That would be the way to go, for sure.

You're about the same distance from your dealer as I am from mine. Pretty much have to be self sufficient. I haven't talked to them since they installed the stoves.
Thanks for the complement on the stove. At that stage I still hadn't put the tile down. It's a cement floor but I wanted to dress it up a little. It's a great little stove but the firebox is small for CONTINUOUS heating but great if you want to cook on it. I can have the stove top at 700 degrees in about 15 minutes. With coal, it will hold a bed of coals overnight though.

My theory on the propane prices is that it is all about what I used to call " willingness to pay" meaning to make max profit you have to determine what the public is willing to pay. Much like the gas you put out a very high price increase then sit back and judge the reaction of the public. If its too strong as in the case of $5 gal gas you drop it back to a lower price. Never what it was originally but enough to make people say ""wow, I'm glad the price is back down!" But they never realize it used to be $1.70 as in propane so now you think $2.20 is great. Wait a little while and raise it again but not as high...then eventually lower it but again never back to what it was before the raise. Anyway thats my thoughts. We in the midwest had over $5 at the Kansas propane central storage while at the same time the storage in Texas was $1.57! The interesting point was according to the Propane association "Kansas supplies Texas"

Thanks again for the input

Soon this will be over for another year and I can go crappie fishing...thats what really counts!
