It's a great buy and a pioneer in the axe industry. Just don't get ur heart set on splitting everything with it. It's great for small to medium sized rounds with little to no knots. For the bigger and knottier stuff I use the wedges or splitter. You'll still be amazed with it though. Watch your shins cuz it cuts like butter. I advise picking up the fiskars blade sharpener, it's a cheap grab and works great. Our local sears carries the fiskars line.
Will do, they had one for 9 bucks on there. I'll be sure to order one. I think it'll be great for me. I have a lot of trees to choose from and don't like to tackle the really big trees.
You will want to change your swing from the heavier mauls. I used to swing over my shoulder and blast rounds right in the center using some grunt with a 6 lb splitting maul. You don't need this much power with the the X-27, try this, stand with your feet out past your shoulders and square to the round. Raise straight up over/behind your head, then bring it down with some speed, but you don't have to put much weight behind it. Aim for the sides of the round, work around it, then split the center after you have only the core left standing.
Having your feet that far apart and swinging over your head keeps that razor sharp X-27 away from your toes/feet/ankles when you get a miss or a deflection. If you are swinging old school and miss...guess where that sucker is aimed...yep...right at your Sgt Hulka. Setting the round inside an old tire also keeps the blade away in a mishap and contains the splits until you are done with that round. Wear gloves....the X-27 is really sharp...don't ask how I know.

Best way to look at it, the Fiskars is a whole different tool than a maul, so don't approach it as if it were a maul. My 28" required even more adjustment in stance and swing than a 36" would, but I love it. All the energy that used to be wasted in the swing can now go into a longer splitting session.

This is how you get past even the biggest rounds.....so for those who continue to say you cannot use the Fiskars for large rounds...this is how it is done.
I have not split anything larger then 30" or so across but the x27 is fantastic for anything 14" and under it really is 1 swing per split. The bigger rounds you will wack at it all day if you try to split in half. Do it like moto7 said and its a breeze no mater how big it is. And he is right on about how to swing it. Its all about control and head speed. I only half swing it for most wood. If its twisted grain or something I will have to really put some A$$ into it but the axe wasnt really designed for that.

I split everything that is straight grained (no real bad knots, not too stringy) with my X27. I like it because I can swing a lot more times without being tired. Except for the really gnarly pieces, it takes the same number of swings as with my 8# maul. So I get more wood split without feeling tired.
I split some 28" diameter 16" long oak over the last week with my X27. Only the three or four rounds that started to flair out at the bottom of the tree gave me trouble. Best purchase I ever made......wish I had bought it before I did.
Occasionally I will stumble across a set of wood that it wants to stick in.....that is when the maul comes out.
As for your swing, I haven't adjusted mine at all. If wood is very easy to split, I use a little less power, but otherwise, it is the same swing I have always used.
