Feeling the Heat

Driving by and stopped in to the local stove shop to add to the stash. They have a 10 bag max so I figured I would get that, LaCrete softies. Standing in line behind a Man (term used lightly) who was berating the girl behind the counter. Even though he knew the 10 bag policy, he had driven 45 minutes and was not going to leave without what he deserved. It got to the point where he was close to "getting what he deserved" after he told me to shut up and mind my own *** business. Once he decided to leave with his 10 bags, the salesperson said that wasn't the worst she has seen lately.
Is it really getting that bad? Reminds me of the gas crunch and fights at the pumps in the 70's.

Wow, I can't understand it! Yesterday I drove by the local farm store where I get my pellets in the summertime and there were pallets (1 ton/pallet) of pellets all lined up. There's plenty of supply here.

Yesterday I picked some up at the place where I purchased my stove. There was a 5 bag limit for customers who purchase their stove here. A two bag limit for all other customers. There was a guy that was going nuts in there and saying he deserved better than 5 bags because he drove from so far away and didn't leave until the owner booted him. Sucks for him because he was such a dink that he didn't get any pellets.

Beginning to wonder how much of this is being fueled by the media. Can't look in a local paper or watch local news without someone commenting on the pellet shortage. I think that it just has a lot of burners scared.

Guess I just believe in personal responsibility. If I did not plan properly and ran out, it would be MY fault and I would deal with it. I have "loaned" a few bags to people I know that are really having a tough time. If they pay me back, good for both of us.
Remember "Karma is a patient bit**"

ALL OF IT (here anyway)
We have a local Harman dealer (whom I'd like to call out by name) that gets on the local radio and goes on for 2 segments about how he is the only pellet dealer in our county and how we have a MAJOR pellet shortage and yata yata yata...........THE ONLY thing he is doing is making sure he can sale 26 ton in 4 hours !!
Meanwhile there are 20 other places to get pellets WITHOUT bag limits all over our county !!
It's VERY irritating to here this guy single handedly CREATE his own "pellet monopoly" or to corner the local market with force. That being said if your dumb enough to buy into his chit and not do any research than you get what you deserve !!
I understand the possibility of a shortage in states that have no pellet mills and the added cost ($300 a ton )due to fuel to transport but here we have a mill 15min away ! And cont rare to what the people want to believe houses go up by the dozens around here, which means more saw dust !!

In the end though you probably should have minded your business ::P they guy probably had a legit point...... On second thought I disagree with the last part of my prev. statement.....

Hell the guy could have shot ya !! thats all we need as gun owners and pellet burners
headline news; Another right wing nut job shoots man over pellets, why we need more strict gun laws and pellet rations ! !!!!!!;lol;lol

I could see it now ! LOL !!!

I could not disagree more.

I'm sure it was just a worker, in no way a decision maker in the company, following orders from her boss. I would've thrown the @sshole out myself before I would've done something far worse.

ps. no crazy gun lunatics up here, makes me a little braver than you fellows to the south

You need to post that dealers name. Do the same when you have a reason to brag about a dealer and let the reputations sort out success and failure.

your "PS" proves a VERY good point, and is exactly why we fight for our rights "down here" !

Shortage here big time and I've been in a line with nothing but cordial
respectful people who feel lucky to be able to get fuel. That guy is
an azzhole and fortunate he left with any pellets.

How much is being fueled by this particular thread? I've still got almost 2 ton in the cellar, and I'm ALMOST READY TO PANIC AND BUY EVERY BAG I CAN FIND WITHIN 200 MILES ............. or, maybe not ............ OH, LOOK THERE'S A SQUIRREL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i hear you can burn squirrel....at least in a Harmon you can...heh.

Hoss down here there are no pellets its not an illusion. Many people put their last
bag in the hopper this week and unable to find more. Even my local pellet dealer is dry.
Never seen his warehouse empty in the nine years I've had this stove.
If there are plenty available where you live consider yourself a lucky dog.

The worst part of this whole mess is that NOW the pellet SELLERS know what you are willing to pay! $8 -$10 a bag.

As for the guys going nuts to get a bag of pellets, imagine what's going to happen when the grid goes down, all electronic banking goes bye bye, charge cards don't work, gas stations don't work, and your family is hungry. What do you think those same nuts will be doing then?

I have enough I was just telling Hoss that it is not just media bs.
At woodpellets dot com yes you can order pellets but have to
buy a certain amount and it takes 2-3 weeks so not really a
solution for the folks who need heat now.

The girl behind the counter was younger than my own kids and she handled it very well. I, on the other hand, was getting just a little annoyed. I have been told that I have a bad? habit of sticking up for what I feel is right.

I would advise them not to come around my property luting for goods::-)::-)

Media/politics, ruin so much of our society. I don't believe the hype. Land of the free, think again, (I know things could be worse) it's just a damn shame, how one cold winter (first one in years) can send all needed utilities into a money hungry tail spin. All we can do is sit back and continually get robbed of our hard earned money?? Politicians are more concerned about voting against each other based on party affiliation , or telling us what we want to hear, than they are about governing for the people. It's sickening and only going to get worse. Democrats/Republicans, same chit, different piles.

easy now, I might just be one of those "right wing nut jobs" after all I own a gun and burn pellets .

difference is though , I make sure I prebuy enough to cover a hard winter and when I have a really hard one I have traditional heat to fall back on.
no need to start the political BS. we get too much of that to start with

Why aren't people calling Home Depot? I was at the one in S. Portland this week, and saw they had pallets of pellets with people's names on them. If they're reserving pallets, then they must be getting lots.

I know the HD that I usually go to in Augusta had pellets at least 4x these last two weeks, as I got some on Wed and Fri of the week before and some more this Thursday, and they also had some earlier in the week. You can call customer service every couple days to check. I also called the TSC near the HD, and they said they had 2 truckloads coming this week.

As for getting 5 bags or 2 bags, I have to say that is a bit ridiculous. That's like putting a bandaid on a gusher. With the near-zero overnight temps we've had in Maine, this past week, 5 bags will barely last 2 days. 2 bags means having to go back every day. At that point, you'd be better off heating with oil or electric spot heaters. Driving to get 2 bags a day, costs you enough gasoline where heating oil starts to make sense.

This was our first winter with a stove (had it given to us in mid-December) so I didn't know what to expect. A close relative works at TSC and has been getting me pellets at employee cost ($199/ton) and I've also been getting some Lignetics from the local hardware store. The relative got me the last 20 bags of "good stuff" (TS brand hardwood) about 2 weeks ago, and now they are totally sold out. He tells me this week they were selling horse-bedding pellets to some customers, and lots of corn. Meanwhile my old reliable hardware store is out. My last bag is in the hopper, but it was warm enough outside to cycle the Englander off. My wife has really got spoiled and doesn't want to go back to it being 68 in the house. So, this morning I got on the phone. I called 15-20 places. One small hardware store had a few bags left, but only for existing customers-I can't blame him for that. A few places are expecting shipments this week or next. There is one big stove shop about an hour north but their phone was out of order. We had heard through the grapevine that they had some so we drove up there. The phone was out because somebody had hit took out the utility pole next door, and they had just opened a short time before (hours late.) Employees running around like mad, trying to get computers up and running. I get in line at the pellet counter, signs all over the place stating, "sorry, we are sold out" but I hear them tell the one guy in front of me that he can have 10 bags but will have to pay cash since the credit card machine isn't up and running yet. Employee asks me what I want, I say pellets, he says come back in a few minutes...so I go find my wife and get $20 from her so I'll have enough to pay cash. By the time I make the short walk back a line has developed! They start selling, and the guy who took my place asks for 30 bags and they say okay-the rest of us were out of luck! Grrrr! That put me in a sour mood for a good chunk of the day.
