old water heaters as expansion tanks?

I know many people use propane tanks for expansion tanks- I am wondering if old water heater tanks would work as well. After all, they handle 40-60psi all day so I would think they would work fine. Any reason they wouldn't? Easier to find and less mess to clean out than a propane tank...

Thats what I used . It was a one year old take out electric that I found on the curb for 50 bucks . I capped the hot and cold inlets and plumbed the expansion line into the water heater drain . Been working good so far .
