I also encountered all the above. After this winter I suspect I won't hear any flack any more. She has even offered to help

When I am driving I am constantly pointing out wood and down trees I see on the side of the road or highway. She has no idea they are there until I say something. I see firewood everywhere.

She stopped asking why I am constantly dragging firewood home. She knows when she asks how much is enough the answer is always, "There is never enough!

We started burning back in 2008. Since then, the piles have accumulated and a wood shed had risen. She was always telling me you are going a little overboard. Now when we have company over and they look out back, she's the one telling them how important it is to have seasoned wood. Go figure!

Well we are the opposite of most of you. Wife wanted the insert. Now she says let's go buck and split, stack wood. I buck she splits, Hydraulic splitter, then I stack. But this winter we are running out of dry wood. We will burn the hemlock that was for shoulder seasons next. How long does hemlock need to CSS before burning? BTW she used to split by hand. I think I have a keeper!
When your done with her , I'll take her off your hands , if she can still split by hand . :)

Got the new roof on the main storage area a couple weeks ago. The new roof panels are 79" long, so I was able to add a third row of wood under the entire 32' length now. With the added 8 foot bay on the end I basically doubled my covered wood storage area in this location. I can now keep a full 12 cords undercover. Here is a photo. I'm just about finished filling in the last bay now.

Ok good, I'm not the only one then, eh!

My wife you used to call me "nuts" too, but now after 14 years of burning wood, and probably paying no more than $300-$400 annually for heating costs, she "gets it". Some of our friends were paying $6.00+ for propane and will have a total heating bill for this year north of $4K !! Ouch !

My kids are still "tree huggers" though and are opposed to ANY tree cutting. They weren't pleased with me cutting 45 cords of pine this winter, but they'll get over it .... LOL

She never cared too much, just asking "You're not going to cover the whole yard with wood are you?"
After this winter I don't think I'll ever hear a word about it again.

Common problem, find a pre wood heating bill and one after, that usually has a calming effect.

When we bought our house 2 years ago we only had an oil furnace for heat. The first oil delivery came in February, just over $1,000. That was basically to refill the tank from what was used starting in October to early February. I'm in Seattle, so it's not even very cold compared to what most of you all face every winter. That was my motivation to improve the house. I replaced all the single pane aluminum frame windows with double pane vinyl frame and installed a Pacific Energy Super insert with insulated liner. This year the oil man hasn't come by. I've just finished splitting 2 cords of plum wood (never again will I order fruit wood, so hard to split). I've got about 4.5 cords split and stacked for next winter, half douglas fir, half plum. No complaints from the Mrs. yet, as she's nice and warm inside all winter.
