The Wood Processing Area

I split on my red rock driveway, every time I go out I lay a tarp down, do my splitting, put back everything nd then drag the tarp away, except for the new splits, you couldn't tell I was there. The splitter trash also easily dumps into the fire pits this way....

Not really they hold up pretty well, they get small holes if you drag a heavy load on top of stone. But you could also pick it up and drop it in a wheel barrow or garbage can and have instant kindling without the mess. Also buy the thickest and cheapest one you can find, HD had a great sale on camo 9x12 for 6 bucks, I bought 2 and now wish I got 6, they all gone now...

I hate getting gravel or stones anywhere near my lawn so if your other option is going to be wood chips go with that...haha...

If you've got wood piled or stacks, you're going to have mice and snakes. I find dozens of nests and snake skins when I move wood inside. Doesn't bother me much since poisonous snakes in MA are quite rare.

As for my spot. My driveway. Much to the dismay of my wife. I used to stack around the driveway as well, but it's just too shady and damp so I moved the stacks to the back of the house along side my neighbors field... Which has increased the number of mouse nests and snake skins, but I don't get mold growing on the splits and it blocks a lot of the unsightly and unmaintained field from being seen. Just moved my kindling stack over there this afternoon. Unfortunately the only way to move in bulk to that spot is via the neighbors property and while they are kind enough to grant said permission I just prefer navigate my own land...which means a lot of trips with a wheel barrow.

Here's my thread on the "processing" subject, with lots of pics. These were all from last summer. Now that I am working on getting 2-3 years ahead, my stacking is going to be on the north side of my yard, under some pines that I keep trimmed up off the ground. It gets really good morning and afternoon sun and I will have to top cover to keep the pine needles out of the stacks. I'm also hoping a huge "wood fence" keeps my neighbors ANNOYING SHEPPARD from trying to "argue" with my Shetland all day long.

My splitter has wings. I made 12 x 12 extensions out of 1/4 plate. Sometimes I remove the one table "leaf" and bolt on a 2 x 10 ramp, roll chunks right off the truck / trailer and onto the splitter. It works VERY well.
