Ran out of dry wood about 2 weeks ago, and had to start burning home heating oil. Had my neighbor over for dinner on Saturday night, and he said ... "hey, where's the fire?". After explaining the lack of 'seasoned' wood, he said, "I have a ton of locust rounds from a tree I took down when I put in my pool ... 9 years ago.". With that, we grabbed the beers, fiskars, wheelbarrow, and got to work. The bark was disintegrated for the most part, but apparently, its true ... locust never seems to rot. Split pretty easily, and except for the gigantic pieces (which will go into the stacks for next year), all dry enough to burn. Probably got enough to go 3 weeks.

What was the moisture content? If you have a meter.

Careful. A full load of Locust (BL?) can burn pretty hot....

I know it's needed. But what a shame to burn BL in the shoulder season. It is shoulder season right?

Love this time of year as well as the beginning of Fall when all is needed is a quick fire to take the morning chill or dampness out of the air!

Sure does, its great stuff, I found about 20 splits in the back of one of my stacks and burned it the last couple of nights since its been down to about 10, burned for almost 12 hours with good heat til the end. Wish I had about 10 cords of the stuff.

Yep ... I'm not stuffing it full, just enough to take the edge off ... its almost April ... not getting those bitter cold nights any more.

That's good! A full load could make your stove a molten mass of metal! !!!

Nothing wrong with burning full loads of Locust

Hopefully you won't have to burn it all but the way things are going, we're gonna need heat for a while yet. I usually don't burn full loads, but just put a couple of splits in the back to stretch out the burn sometimes.

We have none on our property but a neighbor has several that I'm getting and I have access to a grove on another neighbor's. He may be selling that property soon though, so I need to get back over there and get some of the dead ones. I've got two cords or so stacked, and can probably add three more.
