I got a few loads of wood off the side of the road today for 2015-2016.

What are the large rounds on the left of the bed?

Thats what I would say also

Resembles Norway but I don't think so.

I say Norway Maple, which is similar to Ash in appearance. I am not sure why it looks more like Norway maple than Ash, but it does.

Nice grab! I scored my last scrounge from CL&P as well. I wonder if there is a way to find out where they are going to be next? I tried to get my wife to go ask the guys on the truck but she wasn't having it!

I know the Green Ash from the Norways because the Norways all came from a nursery. The Ash run wild across the fields to the edge of the woods.
The Norways shade our backyard.
Definitely Norway.

Have your wife find a mole who works for the company. Get tips on big job locations. Approach the guy picking up tree limbs and stuffing the chipper. Hes usually the low one on the pole.
With lower wages than the bucket guy he might rat out the boss's work schedule.

Nice. I've been picking up after CL&P too. Where abouts are you located? I've been seeing lots of guys out scrounging after them lately.

Mine wouldn't ask also.....I guess suggesting she wear her two piece Bikini shot it down:rolleyes:

I always seem to be a day late with the CL&P guys. But those big orange Asplundh trucks are all over the place lately. I did pick up a small scrounge of aspen here in East Haddam a few weeks back - but I can also see places where there must have been a lot more wood that disappeared before I got there. And then there are the places where the nearest homeowner runs out and tacks a "No Trespassing" sign on the logs...and then leaves them there to rot <>

I have two of those no trespassing signs right down the street from me I have been watching it sit there for 2 months now.

They were all over my area (Southington) last summer/fall. I missed out as I was new to wood burning, had no saw, no good way to move the wood and no idea what I was doing! So I called CL&P to see if they would give me an idea of where they are going to be (they have a few older posts on their web site about this http://www.cl-p.com/Templates/PressRelease.aspx?id=4294986788). The lady was very nice but advised me to call the tree companies they sub out to.

I too have been scrounging a lot from the tree trimming crews... I get 1-2 full size pick up loads each week...

Regarding the no trespassing signs / Do not take wood... Buddy of mine checked with town ordinance officer: according to him, if the wood is within 10' of the pavement, the owner of the property has 24 hours to post a sign stating name, address, tel # , indicating hands off.... Anytime thereafter ,it's up for grabs.

I'd like to get a print out of that ordinance info, keep that in the truck....

As far as scrounging off I-95 I did 1 load late Feb, nice white oak / maple & cherry.... I was on the soft shoulder as well....I did check with DOT after, they said the State police will get you if your on the hard shoulder scrounging.... Soft shoulder not so much, but he said with all the line crews out clearing any state route , help yourself...

I was picking logs off one road, every house / yard had scraggly signs " leave wood/ don't take" one long stretch between houses had a good bunch piled up... I ran my saw a bit took a load off,,,, went back 5 days later still no sign .... Ran saw for couple cuts.....Out comes Jr " um uh hate to be a @*%#@ , but we want the wood."... I was like ok, no worries... Kindly suggested he put up a sign like all his neighbors .... He did, least he was kind enough to tell me not to unload my truck or leave the logs I cut up on the ground....

Just to add a further known observation: some of these yards have had trees down with " the don't take wood signs" for weeks / months and not 1 log has been cut or anything cut to splittable length by the line crew has even been moved...... So sad like we've all seen , it's just going to sit there & rot.....

One guy near me is scrounging too and he's selling cut to stove length rounds, for $40.00 a rack ( about a wheel barrow amount) ..... Hasn't sold any yet.....wonder why???? LOL!!!!

There's a site right around the corner from me - CL&P came through last summer and took down all sorts of trees. Big ash log laying in the brush probably 3/4 cord in that one log alone ...all sorts of smaller stuff laying around. And a cardboard sign "Keep Out" that's rotting away with the rest of it.

I think I'm going to have some pretty big ash logs myself - I've got several very large ash trees growing amidst a stand of white pine down by the town road. Each ash is showing signs of EAB infestation. :(
