I thought this 18" diameter log was oak - it had no bark and was soaking wet from laying on the ground for no telling how long. After bucking I saw how dark it was and figured it was a water-logged cherry since there were other cherry logs nearby. But it stayed dark after splitting and the surface drying. I assume walnut but it still has a lot of deep crimson coloring in it.

Black Walnut. Split it and smell it.

Yes, I forgot to mention the smell. It smelled like red wine, like a cabernet. Not as sweet and distinct as a cherry and not the sour/drunk vomit smell of a an oak.

It to me almost looks like two different woods, Walnut on the left and Oak in the middle, but you said this is all from the same log. The way that you described the smell sounds more like Oak to me, Walnut has more of a blunt smell to it, not sweet, hard to even describe what it is like.

You are correct, I made a mistake and didn't realize it until I thought about your response. Sorry. I only bucked one round out of the overall log and it is the darker, longer split. I got them confused while taking pictures. The one in the middle with the red look to it is different. Sorry. But same question - assume it is still walnut?

I've never had oak look like the middle split before. Mostly red and white oak around here.

The pictures are great, no mistaking that wood grain. First pictures Ive seen on here where you can actually see the wood.
What kind of camera did you use?
Never seen spalting in Black Cherry before.
 
I have some kitchen counters that look like the middle split.
 
Walnut without a doubt!
 
Recently saw some split butternut at my buddy's (which I hope to acquire when he moves next month), which also looks a lot like those 2 splits. Same genus, so not surprising. Butternut doesn't have much color to it though, just a pale tawny, but the split comes off straight as an arrow and almost smooth enough to lacquer! Feels like it would burn nice, but I hear it's not as good as black walnut.
 
BL for sure. Half the weight of red oak.
 
I went back today to buck up the rest of the "walnut." I saw the base end of the log for the first time and it sure looks like cherry. It has been exposed to the sun more and was drier than the rest of the log which is totally soaked. You can see it here stacked with the other logs - the base log is in the center of the picture under another log.

Below is another log - darker in color - just a shot to show the grain.

Below is one of the base log - sure looks like cherry to me even if the rest of it is darker than any cherry I've seen

The only other thing to note is I see a few sharp bumps under the thick bark - pretty sure I've seen these on cherry logs. Would this be on a walnut?
