Today 4-11-2014 at Menards you can get 8 foot landscape timbers for 97 cents each.
Price is good till 4-13-14.

Have been cutting cedars out of the swamp but at this price I will never have to get another anything for runners.

I've been using barn wood. I don't have a Menards near by but I never even thought to use landscape timbers, I had 4x4's in my mind for some reason and definately don't want to use them with how pricy they are. Forgot all about landscape timbers.
 
I actually just ordered 30 from Home Depot, to pick up later today. Not as good a price, but they're like $1.50 right now there.
 
Hmm I"m going to Home Depot tonight actually, that is still a very good price. I might grab a few.
 
Good deal, timbers are my favorite thing to stack on. No menards down here though
 
I have been using old cross arms from power poles that I got for free. Those sound like they would work good, I may have to check it out.

Still easier to stack in a pallet crib, I say. Only cost to me is some scrap 2x4's for the knee braces.

I used to do that, nothing wrong with it and it works well. I got tired of replacing the rotten pallets though.

Picked up some landscape timbers today. Lowes got me though.....$3.48 a piece.

Have to calculate in the cost of chasing the pallets if you don't have ready access. Fuel especially. So dropping 17 bucks for big chunky solid pieces of treated lumber that was on my direct path home makes more sense for me. I have fence T posts to burn on my land so those and the timbers work well for me. I have used Backwoods Savage's technique of cutting saplings and that works too. But .99 for the treated timbers make more sense for me. If I worked somewhere that had pallets for free I would probably use your method.
 
Is this only certain stores? I called menards in ohio and they know nothing about it. Price is 3.99
 
RF - just keep an eye on it at all the local box stores. Watch their flyers and they will be on sale soon. I bought mine from Menards to build my bridge for under a buck a few years ago.
Poor pic but there are two utility poles holding that up and gives my quad and trailer easy access to the wood cutting area and lots of dead ash!!

It wasn't changed on the tag in the store. I went to the contractor desk and asked. I did look online first. Perhaps you could look online. If it gives the price online just order that way and go to the store to pick up.

A combo of both could work even better, especially if it is work to obtain pallets. Jack up your pallets with the 99 cent timbers. $3.00 will get two pallets up off the ground. Off the ground they will last much longer.
 
I bought 20 timbers from HD for $1.47 ea. Tempted to go back next week and get more.
Lot's of projects!

landscape timbers also ,at HD for .99c for 1 more day

The pallets shown in my photo above were free from Lowes. No kidding, that's where I got them. Bought the tuba-furs at the same time.

I like em to, I will be putting together some more this year.
Only cost to me is screws, the 6 ft long pallets makes a nice 12ft, book end rack

Thanks for the heads-up. I've got lots of free pallets to stack on, but needed a few timbers for a border to keep mulch around some shrubs from flowing onto the sidewalk.
12 timbers x $.97, 6 x 2' rebar for stakes (also on sale for $.59) and some lags to hold it together and I've got materials for a $<25 project!
 
I also took advantage of the deal at Menards. Thanks BoiledOver.
 
I went to Menards and they still had the 99 cent sale marked on the gardening timbers.
So they let me have them for that price. I got 25. Good deal.
 
Picked up 30! Great deal.
