Like the title states I'm thinking it's one of these 3. pretty tough to split on a scale if 1 to 10 I'd say an 7 to 8 in toughness to split, pretty stringy wood and strong smell of a mix of sourness and fresh mulch if that makes any sense thanks guys!

I'm thinking maybe some type of Maple. The 'sour, mulch' smell is probably due to the wood lying around for a while....

Looks like a member of the maple family to me too, wood can get some funky smells when its been wet.

silver maple

Maple, but I don't think it's silver maple. All the silver I have the bark is more flakey or scaly. Maybe red maple.

Sounds good guys thanks. Is Soft maple decent burning wood?
It dries quick, splits well and lights off quickly. Middle of the pack for total btus though. Many (including me) like it for shoulder seasons and for cold starts in mid-winter before adding the primo denser hardwoods.

Cool! So not a bad find on the homestead here! Can't wait to burn it in my new stove I'm going to install this summer
