Hey guys I got a solid haul over the past couple days from tree crews cutting (I attached a picture). I was especially excited about the black birch since there isn't a lot of it on my land and my stacks are filled with oak almost exclusively. I did have a couple rounds of some wood I wasn't sure about however. I took some solid shots with my maul at this stuff and it would just stick in like the wood was rotten (it isn't). I'm thinking it isn't good wood and might be some kind of junk softwood but I can't tell. I attached some pictures, if anyone knows that would be great. Thanks.

There is black birch there - the OP recognized he had some. That's excellent firewood. BTU ratings up past oak, and closer to shagbark hickory. I'm lucky it's the predominant species on my woodlot acreage - but I don't get up there cutting as often since we moved. There's plenty of hickory around the new house though.
I'm not so sure about the softer stuff being white pine. The branching grain in the split makes me think it might be some kind of maple - or maybe aspen but I don't know. I can't see enough of it to guess.

Thanks for the responses guys. I cut from a bunch of downed trees so it's difficult to tell all the varieties. I'm not great at identifying trees and traditionally I think of pine as brown bark only, but looking at some pictures I could be wrong (some look grey).
BEConklin I actually got all this wood right on the side of 395. The state is doing some massive trimming and I just pulled over with my truck and saw and started going to town. There had to have hundreds of cords just laying on the side of the highway, it's a crime they are chipping it all.

My wife and I were on 395 yesterday - coming from Rt. 85 in Waterford heading up to Montville - I could see huge amounts of fresh wood chips all over the place - but no logs left except a couple that were big enough for saw logs but if I recall, they were in a pretty tough spot to get to.

Ah man, I feel bad. I just joined this site or I would have posted something for the CT guys out there. On my last load the staties kicked everyone out anyway...so I'm assuming it wasn't strictly legal. I do wish there was a schedule so I could find out where they are cutting next, but obviously it would have to be close to be worthwhile.

I think I know where quite a bit of wood will be cut soon. I was driving down Lake Hayward rd. in Colchester just past the Tractor Supply. All the way from the Rt. 11 overpass to the lake there are all sorts of trees marked with green tape on both sides of the road. There was no tape on the trees a few days ago. If I see any wood I'll post - after I get mine that is
Nice! That's about 25 min away for me so I could definitely make the trip. I talked to a state guy today and he said they rent the machines for stretches of time to do tree work. Right now they have a couple rented so there's going to be another job starting. He is gonna try to find out where for me tomorrow.

i live in Norwich and missed out on that haul. My neighbor must have pulled out 5 F 350 dually loads. I travel to Hartford everyday and have managed to scrounge the last 10 years or so on RT 2.
They are now chipping eveything pretty quick. Hard to scroung now.

Grrrrr, sucks hearing these stories but at least some of you are getting some good scrounges.
My work schedule is nuts, 12 hr rotating shifts + the last 6-8 weeks has been very busy with the spring maintenance schedule at work. Just about every day I had off to go scrounge something good it was crappy weather.
