How do I use this fireplace? - newbie

Hello,

I have this fire place in my home we bought. Brand says "Heatilator" Model EL36 . There is a gas control valve on the side wall. And a flue open close

Is that a gas burner? I lighted it and it works, had the flue open. But I didn't know if it's as simple to use or if I needed anything else?

Appreciate instructions. The ones I found in the manufactures website isn't helpful.

Gas Fireplace Log set is needed of course......warmth at the flick of a switch:cool:
 
I would of never thought that a Gas Line would be placed in a Wood burning fireplace......this may be worth looking into for my Wife, she has no patience when it comes to lighting a fire.

Yes. The gas head on a gas log set is normally part of a burner pan assembly. Depending on the fuel type - LP or NG - that burner pan will contain either Vermiculite (LP) or white sand (NG), to diffuse the gas & resultant flames. The log lighter is basically a pipe with holes in it, altho there are some that are drilled castings.

Good to know. So if fitted with the right head it could be setup to use a log set?
 
So to my original post - what exactly do I need additionally to use this? The EL36 manual say manufactured logs can be used. Is that like duraflame log? Specific pointers appreciated. :)

And I suppose what I have is not meant to be operated only on gas but just to ignite whatever log I buy? I don't want to use natural fire wood.
 
So for starers: I only need to buy duraflame log and use my gas ignite for a couple of minutes till the log starts burning?


The other product is an optional enhancement I suppose?

Most Duraflame logs I've seen are quite flammable on their own and you just light the bag they come in. They use wax to hold the log together. No need to use a gas igniter with them - I suspect it might be dangerous.

Prestologs and some others are pure wood by-products (sawdust and wood chips) that have been compressed into a log shape without the use of chemical binders. You would use your ignitor with them just as with wood.

If you're going to burn either of those I would get a new fireplace grate that has smaller openings as both of those kinds of logs tend to fall apart as they burn.
 
The PrestoLog brand name was bought up by Duraflame, they now have wax in them. HomeFire Prest-Logs do not, nor do Northern Idaho Energy Logs which were the original PrestoLog.
 
Hi, I would use cord wood unless you just want a cozy looking fire now and then, Duralogs can be very expensive after a while. While a fireplace are not as efficient as a wood stove they do give heat and have a nice look to them. The gas will allow you, not just a start to your fire but will keep a fire going when using large splits that sometimes have a bit of moisture. Good luck, keep warm.

Duraflames smell bad. Get real wood.
 
It's a popular brand name that ends up describing the item, like Kleenex or BandAid.

If you want to get a gas log set, just remove that grate and log lighter. Personally I don't see any reason to burn fake logs, why not just have a gas log set?
This fireplace is designed to do either or. And you don't have to use any certain log set as long as it fits. Go talk to your local hearth shop if this is something that interests you.
