I fill the firebox with wood, place 1 alcohol starter in a crevice and let er rip! I only use kindlin if its convenient, so almost never.

Oh, well, then my confession wasn't really that important. I use a tunnel of love as well for these N/S stoves. Through the stove glass the thing is raging hot very fast. I leave the door cracked at startup and the BK is woofing within minutes which is my signal to latch the door. The NC30 actually has a rapid woof during startup, a flutter like a bird is flapping wings in the stove, almost scary.

I'm into high density doug fir and cedar right now so easy starting.

LOL Sounds like your stoves have gone to the dogs. I never get this woofing. Maybe I have the door open a bit more?

My old US 2500 would actually burp the door open a little if the latch wasnt at least touching to close.....

The new Princess ultra woofs a little too, not like the tube stove though.

Have had several tube stoves and have never experience this. I must be closing the door long before it gets to this point.

Maybe it's my all vertical flues and dry softwood. Supposedly the woofing is just the fire trying to push more smoke up the flue than the flue is sucking so the flue gets pressurized, slows the fire, then the flue catches up and creates a vacuum and sort of pops. I never got this woofing with small fireboxes, just the 2.85+ through a 6" flue. You can actually see the fire pulsate with the rapid flapping from the NC30. Like a pulse jet. The NC30 will keep on woofing for a few minutes even with the door shut if the fire was ripping. It's got to be a momentum thing.

I think you nailed. Watching the fire pulse is pretty trippy. Mine usually happens at startup as I close the door.

Makes sense, maybe our flue at 20ft isn't tall enough?

I think maybe the opposite, your longer chimney may be acting as a buffer, I have a straight up 15' stack.

Never had any "woofing" with my stove. From a cold start I close the door as soon as the super cedar is lit, maybe that's the difference.

Maybe take the screen off the cap and get a bird down there to add a tweeter to your woofer. ::-) <ducking>

I have added an upgrade to my Ashford!
Now with side shelf!

It does not look nearly as strange as I thought it would to have only one.
Hope I can find some mitten warmers for next season.

That side shelf is a nice addition. How much did you have to give for that?
