New Guy ... Installing Harman XXv with Min. required vent

You can do it.....as long as you follow clearance to combustables PLUS clearance to things that may ignite outside. For instance, with a minimum installation, you are MUCH more likely to get live cinders exiting the pipe. Where will they go? On the deck? Into a pile of leaves gathered by the wind below the pipe? Into the gas leak from that leaky old antique care outside? etc, etc. There are two major problems with minimal installations......no natural draft at all if the power goes out, and a strong wind could overpower your combustion fan and push exhaust back into the unit.....thats about it tho.

your decision about the 3' lift outside sounds like a good one, but do yourself a favor and nix the horizontal termination....tends to soil the side of the house

Tristan - I did the same as you - I came out of the wall of the doghouse that previously ocntained a gas fireplace, turned it up 90 degrees to the vertical, ran it up 3 feet, which was almost to the top of the doghouse, and then turned it back horizontal and terminated it. Basically, I used the Simpson Dura Vent kit, but bought 3' solid sections of vent pipe instead of using all of the 1' sections. This was especially important as I did not want any joints inside my doghouse...

I did run a 1 foot section of pipe away from the doghouse before I terminated the venting, so the vent cap is now about 16" from the house. Time will tell if it gets real dirty or not.
