Feeling the Heat

I managed to shear the wires on the temp probe on my Accentra Insert last year. I managed to splice them back together, to finish out the last 2 weeks of heating, but I figure i should get a new probe for the coming winter

my question is: is there only one model of these probes?
two years ago, I replaced my ESP probe, and I discovered that the probe I had ordered was a new model, and I had to drill out the hole in my stove to get it in.

I want to avoid any such surprises this time around.

If you've successfully spliced the wires together, why replace the probe?

I only ran it like that for a couple of weeks, so I am not certain if the wire nuts maintain a good enough contact for an accurate reading. My understanding is that the variations in resistance with temp on those probes are pretty small.
