What is this stuff (2 rounds in the middle)? They are about as heavy as an engine block, even heavier than similar-sized oak rounds...

Huh...must've been the way I pasted the pic in there. It was showing up on my pc...how about now?

Hickory, Shagbark to be exact.

Yep - shaggy. One of my all time favorite firewoods.

ETA - whatever you do don't allow that ground contact for any length of time. You won't believe how fast it will turn to junk if in contact with the ground.

Ahhh ok...Did this one not grow the "shaggy" bark yet or maybe it fell off during the cutting?

Thanks for the tip because I was about to pile some of those on the ground in the back of the yard until fall because I ran out of stack space and we need to clear off the cement patio to put the pool up. Now I'll have to make sure they stay on top of something else.

They appear to get a fungus type rot that happens in pretty short order. Age and size of the tree has quite a bit to do with the appearance of the "shaggy" bark.

Yeah...serious tonnage there. <> You can see where some of the shaggy bark was torn off.
Even if stacked, it needs a top cover or the sapwood will start growing 'shrooms. Most of the stuff I've gotten has been dead, so that could cause this to happen faster...
