A light in the head just went off - I guess I'll need to stoke the boiler in summer in order to get DHW. Don't know how I missed that one - it's a learning process I guess. Perhaps the additional $400 for a tankless electric water heater might be good for when we're on vacation.

I've got a plain old 80 gallon electric hot water heater.

I can heat it with wood/storage via the FPHX & sidearm, or turn the breaker to it back on & just let it heat electrically.

So far I am still doing the wood thing - that might change for a couple of months if real summer weather ever gets here.

If it was me.. I'd use one of those heat pump hot water heaters. you know.. the geyser one that you can just tie in and use the existing DHW tank. In the wood season.. you let er rip. You are likely not letting storage go right down to lowest of the low every time. if you did.. you'd likely still have a tank full of hot enough DHW.

In the off season you let the heat pump cool where it's installed and dehumidify... and put that heat directly into the DHW tank.

I'm thinking of it.. but it's adding plumbing for a ways to go from my area I'd like dehumidified to the utility area where the boiler is.

The heat pump water heaters that I have seen are noisy and expensive.... I think

The cheapo elec water heater or tankless unit is sufficient (imho) - you can get a 12 kW refurb unit for less than $400. http://www.tanklesscanada.ca/stiebel-eltron-tempra-12-refurb.htm

I have a Geyser sitting on a shelf 16 inches below the joists under my bedroom floor. I'm sleeping like a baby:)
