I know.. no pic at the moment!

But.. I'm getting ready to put solar on the barn roof. Guy gets up there and has this gizmo that takes a pic, and plots on there the sun's path.
It shows every month, and will show which trees are shading your proposed system. He shows me a BIG oak that's in the way, and a couple maples that could go. In reality, they aren't that bad, because leaves will be gone when sun is low on the horizon. He says..it's a couple percent. But, looking around, you don't seem like a guy that will have an issue hacking a couple trees (i've got 30 cord log length waiting for me)

So.. I head out on Saturday showing some old friends the new barn. The big oak, that I frankly was going to do some serious trigonometry on (height of it scared me. It's on the border of my land, with 14k volt power line.. I REALLY didn't want to take out the lines!)

So.. on a morning with light winds.. big old oak, and the 12' one next it it blew right over. Guess the lines were ok! I'll be real careful and start working it from the top down. Gonna be a lot of wood in there. When it rains, it pours! That oak will be for 2018 or so at least.

Pics when I get back home.

Maybe it knew what was coming and was scared of you? Be careful, I hate messin' with electricity

Wasn't the pic I planned on sharing. Electric is a ways away.. but I would have been nervous dropping that one.

I cut from the top.. till I was sure it was just hanging there.

I made a cut just about shoulder height, and was nervous that it would 'stand' back up.

Pinched the saw.. I quickly gave it up.. Stihl makes hundreds a day I'm sure.. I didn't want to sacrifice a limb. Saw rolled with the tree and I cringed as I watched the repair bill.

SO.. saw was like this.. and still running for about 20 minutes till I could get a come-along and a few chains.

Thanks for soft ground! Not a thing bent or broken. BIG red oak! This cut was a good 20' up from the root ball. I decided to quit for the day, and went splitting after I got the saw rescued. It was mud up to the choke lever.

Good to hear the saw made it! That would really suck to watch my saw slowly meet it's end. I might cry a lil haha

I like the instinct to let the saw go though. It's a lot tougher to buy an arm or a leg. If I can't work.. won't take long to surpass that saw's value.

I'd GLADLY buy another and not be hurt.

Down, and the stump ALMOST stood back all the way up.

I'm giving the first 14 feet to a buddy to make sides for his dump truck.
