This last thing, 5 feet above the gutter, might be a problem. The chimney must meet the 10/2 rule and on a minimal 4:12 pitch roof that means more than 5 feet above the gutter. Do you know if your installation meets the 10/2 rule? If not, adding some flue will help your draft as well as the neighbor situation.

I load my stove after work at 6 or 7 pm and the cat does not go inactive by morning. In fact, the cat meter is almost always above the active line when I reload at 6 or 7pm the next day. These stoves burn for 30 hours and that means an active cat. I do none of this freshening up of the fire in the morning, I just leave for work.
That's where the Ashford differs from the king and princess.
I to never had to do any morning adjusting with the King. But with the Ashford I do. It has a lot to do with the air gap between the steel firebox top and the iron top. The convection air messes with the probe I think, I know for a fact that the blowers mess with it. I put a brass pipe nipple on mine to fill the void and the blower no longer has much effect on it.
Its either the convection air messin with it or its an effect of the steel cat. I'm not too sure yet. But it's not an issue with the stove necessarily, more with the thermometer. Also since its smaller than the king and throws "softer" heat by design, I need to crank it up in mornings regardless of what the thermometer says.

I know it meets the 10/2 rule. Five feet above the second story gutter but the second story is set back from the first floor. As a result, there's ten feet of clearance from the roof. Still, I might ask them to add a section to prevent my neighbor from getting smoked out. We're surrounded by really tall trees and seem to get a lot of downdraft.

This weekend was cold and wet. We went east to Naches (Yakima) and enjoyed the sun only to return to rain and cold. The house was down to 63 inside but the weatherman forcast 80 on Monday and 90 today so I suffered through the cold. We had one neighbor with a chimney smoking. It's not crazy that you were burning. I can't imagine living where it is so hot that you need AC, maybe in the future as the earth warms right?

Thanks Jay. Around here, that's typical winter weather. In January, our highs are typically around 45 and our lows drop to right around (or just below) freezing. In September and May our highs are in the mid or upper 60s and our lows in the mid or upper 40s. I guess the stove will run well from around September until around May. The fall months are wetter than spring. Will be interesting to see if that effects stove performance. Since my house is a bit higher elevation and in the woods, shoulder season will probably last into June and perhaps begin earlier in September than if I were down in the city.

True. We've been in this house one year and, so far there was one day when we missed not having a/c. There were maybe two additional days when we might have used it but not having it was no big deal. It's a high end home so one might think it should have a/c but at that usage rate the compressor would go out from lack of use.

How do you deal with this weird weather? Do we suffer through the cold, wet summer days and nights knowing sun is right around the corner? It was good to run the stove on Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday my wife said she was too warm when the last of the wood was burning off. I suggested she open the windows and that worked, but it seems wasteful.

We leave all the windows shut and try to let the house warm up when it's sunny. Since it is still nearly daylight at 10pm we spend a lot of time outside and the sun warms our bones. Then we come in and pretty much go to bed.

It's funny but our house stays much colder in the summer than in the winter.

Approaching 100 today in Walla Walla! Now that's hot.

Yup, too warm even for me. 86F predicted for Seattle, 93 up north in Concrete. If so it'll be the first over 80F day since May 1st. We'll see, but I'm betting we don't see over 75F here at our house. The water keeps us cooler with a north wind. If the wind stops and it does warm up we'll be leaving the windows open until about noon, then closing up the first floor windows. That keeps the house at a comfy 70-75 during hot spells.

I'm heading to Chelan on Thursday where it is to be 97 tomorrow. We'll have AC there.

79 degrees in Bellingham with a predicted high of 84. Rest of week is predicted to be cooler.

Yeager's still around in Ol' Bellingham? I use to get gear there before going out to Birch Bay.

We peaked at 93F in Seattle, a new record. It hit 80F at our house.

You must be a sailor. When were you last out this way?
Nope. Just plain old clam digger/fisherman. My wife's family is from Bellingham. Spent a lot of time on Lake Padden. Haven't been there in years. Maybe I'll head that way and see the dealer. If I do....I'll buy you a beer.
