I found www.captainsoot.com on CL. I called him up and he seemed like a really nice and very knowledgeable guy. He also gave me a great price on a PE Summit insert which was considerably cheaper than anyone else in the area. I tried to find review on Captain Soot and I've come up empty handed, positive or negative.

He isnt listed on PE's website as a vendor.I called PE and they actually had the local distributor call me direct. He told me he deals with captain soot all the time, buys lots of product, but isnt an authorized PE dealer. I asked if getting one through him would void any warranty and the distributor wasnt very clear b/c he said hes not getting it from me and im the only guy in the area that supplies them.

My thoughts are that Captain Soot must be getting it from one of the authorized dealerships and then just reselling it? Eitherway if PE is a controlled product and can only be be bought through certain channels...whats the difference if captain soot buys it direct or if I buy it and have captain soot install it?

Im hoping maybe someone on this forum that is from LI has had an experience with him they can share.

Thanks.

Hello- I've seen his ads on CL as well- but no experience with him. I know P/E is distributed through BAC sales NY, I would make sure the warranty isn't affected from getting one from him. PE makes nice stoves, their floating baffle design is first rate. You prob won't even need a warranty issue- but if you do, it would be best to get it right. Good luck with it.
PS what is the price he's giving you??

3500 installed I'm assuming, that's a good price. 2500 for the insert, 500 for the liner and 500 for labor, that's good. He's still making a good margin, but make sure you're comfortable with the place, remember service down the road is important too. But that's a good price. Take care.

The warranty issue is important, especially if Capt. Soot is selling old inventory. Find out which Summit version (A or B) of the insert this is.

The later version will have the updated EBT. Which one you want may depend on the price if they are discounting old inventory.

Thanks.

Got more questions for long islanders....

Brick Fix chimney and stove in center moriches is an authorized pacific energy dealer and just gave me a phenomenal deal. Anyone have experience with them?

I suggest you start another thread with that name in the subject. A lot of folks who know them may not know Captain Soot.

he installed for me,3 grand Napoleon 1402 liner cap and a large piece of flagstone for the hearth. just make sure he screws down the dame cap, he glued mine and the glue failed.
he did offer to fix it after calling him but I went up and installed ss screws into the liner. very happy house is nice and toasty. good luck

Hi,

Anybody else has had a stove install by captain soot? There's still not any review online about him. Any info would be much appreciated. I'm new getting into wood burning stoves, and captain soot was at my house giving me an estimate on a p.e stove. Thank you.

Not to take anything away from captain soot, because he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. But from my research, he is not an authorized PE vendor. Therefore anything purchased through him doesn't have a warranty other than what he offers.

On 2-22-2016 Captain Soot came t check out my Enviro M55 pellet stove that wasn't working. He removed 2 parts (both of the fans) that needed to be replaced. I also asked him to get a control panel as mine had cracked after years of use and needed to be replaced. He gave me an estimate, took my check for the service call and said he would get me the parts prices and call me. He never called so I reached out to him after about a week. He gave me some excuse and I accepted his excuse that the parts supplier hadn't gotten back to him. He said he would call me back. No call again. I called. Got another excuse. Okay, I'm one to always try to give the benefit of the doubt. Not even giving thought to the fact that he never returned a call after I had left messages. Again there was no return call. I called again! Got another BS excuse but he did give me the prices for the parts this time. I was actually hopeful that he would actually call me with arrangements to do the job. Obviously I am a huge schmuck and obviously he didn't want to do the job. He could have just let me know during one of the numerous phone calls I made to him. I got excuse after excuse. Shame on me for giving him the benefit of thinking he was really busy and forgot.
This pellet stove is my main heat source. I am now officially freezing my ass of because of his horrible business practices. Had it been a harsher winter I would have called someone else much sooner but by sheer luck it's been really mild. I run an animal rescue that is home foster based, thank goodness the pups that are here have fur coats but some are here for hospice or have had surgeries and need to get well and have to wear a sweater or coat.
This guy may do good work when he feels like it but he is obviously a very poor business man.

Captain Soot sound like a dirty rotten rascal!

After peppermint pattie's experience, you might want to take a pass as you could be left hanging when you need the help.

I wound up going with BrickFix out of center moriches. Cost was a little higher but they are an authorized PE dealer. They did a good job and were nice people.

I did use captainsoot for a sweep and had no issues.
