Bad deal, there. :(
I'm the only one who's not mortally afraid of poison ivy and deer ticks, so I generally don't have spectators where I cut. ;lol
I don't understand how a tree can go "in an unexpected direction" if you are pulling it, but I don't have any experience pulling 'em down. Maybe they couldn't keep enough tension on it, or it hit another tree...

Not sure. They say the tree spun as it was coming down. Maybe they had the pull rope on the wrong limb?

I know this is a mute point but.....does their insurance come into play at all with a tragedy like this? How exactly does that work?

The reason real pros limb'em and take'em down in sections.

Sounds like branches got tangled in another tree, and the hinge didn't hold. There sure are plenty of things that can go wrong; That's why if there's any questions in my mind, I tend to skip that tree since I'm usually cutting at home and there are always other trees to get.
