I don't know anyone who was happy with 3 channels. TV sucked eggs back then, and we knew it. Bonanza? The Rifleman? Gimme a break...
Netflix ain't a bad way to go, but I'd miss my AHC and Military History channels. Just a shame I need to pay for 10 flavors of ESPN I'll never watch, to get access to the three or four channels I do watch.

Wife and I have basic Phone plan from Virgin..
20.00 month each for 400 minutes talk...Can wait till we get home to check email, Social Networks etc..
Laptop and upstairs PC keeps us in the loop.
no smartphone high bills... can't see paying for internet access twice.
Triple play[ phone/Internet/HD tv with Comcast is 180.00 month. that's enough.

180/mo! Ouch! By your logic, you're paying a phone twice. My data plan is 250MB shared for $15/mo; when it gone, its gone. No home phone

I still have a legacy unlimited data plan on Verizon. $30 per month. I regularly use 6 - 7GB per month

If we get rid of the Comcast home phone, then we are in Double play land and the plan would cost more. cheaper to hold on to it...
I figured out $6.00 a day for phone/High speed net/ 24/7 cable...we do like all the Series shows on HBO/SHO/MAX/STRZ..
people spend close to 6.00 each day at Starbucks and it's gone in a few minutes.
this 6.00 /day covers 24/7 - 30 days a month. Some logic there somewheres...

Oh, that rocks. My wife had to lose her unlimited data with Verizon while upgrading to a newer phone last year. I always wondered if we could turn her phone into a mobile hotspot for home internet but never looked into it. Are you able to?

We use Ooma for our home phone. Works for us. We do pay taxes on it every month, a little less than $3/month. Voice quality is fine; sometimes we have to walk our hand held phones into the room with the Ooma Machine because if a call starts breaking up. That's our only complaint. Not sure why that happens occasionally but just decreasing the distance between the handheld unit and the Ooma box seems to fix it when it does.
We cut cable and installed big honkin' over the air antennas on our house in town and on the house at the river. We grounded both antennas to code. No cable bill. Works for us. We looked at our cable bill/cable package and realized that although we had one of the most basic packages out there, and we didn't watch a third of the channels in the package. I missed HGTV for a little bit after we dropped cable but I got over it quickly. Otherwise we don't miss a thing about cable t.v.
We pay for internet at the house in town and we use a Verizon mifi hot spot for internet at the river house and in the camper when we travel (if free wireless is not provided.)
We pay $83/month including tax for internet in town, Ooma in town, mifi for the river and for travel, and of course the t.v. is free. That's about what we paid for basic internet/cable/phone for the house in town before we cut out cable t.v. and bought Ooma.
We use pay as you go Tracfones and we stay off of them. We don't have a phone at the river, we use the cell phones there if we need them. Mostly we just stay off of the cell phones. We re-up our service plan and buy more minutes about once a year. It costs us about $10/month for each phone.
There is initial costs for infrastructure. Ooma was about $100 IIRC. We bought our own router to lower our monthly internet bill. Of course we had to buy the antennas, the gable mounts, an antenna mast (I think... there may have been a short mast included with the antenna and I think we bought an additional mast) and the grounding materials.
Clothes go on the clothesline or on a drying rack during inclement weather. Insulating the attic was a big help with heating/cooling costs, as are cell shades for the windows and thermal curtain panels over the cell shades in some rooms. We also have area rugs that we put on the hardwoods in the winter. We rent a rug shampooer, clean them and store them in the attic during the summer.
We use a rain barrel to water the garden as much as possible. It doesn't cover all of our watering needs all summer but it helps.

If you use Verizon's mobile hot spot app, it's an extra monthly fee and they cap the data usage even if you have an unlimited data plan.
I found an app called FoxFi which enables the wifi hotspot with no fee and it comes right out of my data plan.
For people you have cable internet most cable companies do not block the networks ( it used to be illegal now they can block them but most dont ) so if you set your TV up to scan for channels with your coax hooked directly to the TV youll get about 8-12 channels.
Tmobile pay as you go is pretty good if you don't make many calls. I use it with a smartphone theres even a way to get a working browser you can check email etc with it. No data plan but you have internet access with it. Costs me about $10yr probably. If you have to have data access the tmobile/walmart plan is $30 a month no contract unlimited data.
