Yesterday I picked up a Avalon Pendelton stove for my sister-in-law. The stove deal came complete with the chimney liner. My plan we to get the stove for my SIL and use the liner on my house. I have a freestanding stove at the front of the house and a fireplace with an insert that was done all wrong. The previous owner put the stove in the insert after opening the damper hoping the stove would draw. They were wrong.

Yesterday I got to the seller’s house and he had removed the surround from around the insert. I removed the screws that held the liner to the stove and climbed up on the roof to remove the pipe. I found that the installers had cut the terra cotta chimney flush with the brick and put the liner through and cemented around it. It did have a stainless cap on it. I had the seller come up in the roof with me to see what he had. We could see terra cotta above every other chimney in the neighborhood so the installers had to have cut it back. I left with no liner.

He is replacing the wood burner with a gas insert. He said he would save the liner if the gas insert installers replace the existing liner. I have very little hope that they will.

Can you use wood liners with a gas insert? I thought I read somewhere that you shouldn’t. Any insight on whether the gas insert installers will suggest replacing the wood liner?

Thanks,

Bob

Most gas inserts use a DV co-linear venting kit which is 3" in diameter. Those 2 liners will not fit thru a 6" SS chimney liner, so I doubt the installers will keep the old liner in place. That being said, when the old liner is removed, chimney work may be required to re-install the terra cotta tile. The portion of the terra cotta that extends thru the top of the chimney is where the DV cap is mounted, & held in place via silicone on the top of the terra cotta & the weight of the liners pulling down. When the installers see that they may have to tapcon the DV cap to the chimney's concrete Mudcap, they may take issue with the install...

The seller said he would save the liner if the gas insert installers removed it. I'll e-mail him with this info so he is sure to get a proper install and to tell them to not bet up the liner when they remove it.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

There would be no reason to need the terracotta liner reinstalled. Did they just cut it flush with the top of the chimney if so there is no reason you could not have just pulled the liner. I cut the liner flush many times it just makes for a cleaner and more professional looking install in my opinion.

They cut the terra cotta flush and cemented the stainless steel liner flush with the brick chimney. What is the best way to get the SS liner out without damaging it?

they cemented the liner in? that is totally wrong the only way to get it out is to break up the cement which will then need repaired and i hope the gas installers know this because they will probably not be prepared for that.

Yes. There was some sort of motor. It looked like cement to me and I have been working with it all summer.

I let the homeowner know what was there and to be prepared for static from the gas inster installer. I am worried that they will trash the liner.

i would bet that they will either Destroy the liner or they will say they cant do it until the old liner is out and the hole is opened enough to get their two liners in

That's what I am afraid of. The liner is in excellent shape too.

If they do wreck the liner up at the top can I cut off the messed up part and splice a new section in?

You absolutely can if you get a coupler and a new piece of liner. It should probably be all the same brand to be sure things fit correctly
