I've got a 5 ton electric and I built a table/stand that puts it about 2-3 inches below my waistline or 34-35 inches. At that height I don't have to lift them to high or have to bend over to work the controls.

I will measure my Huskee 22 ton - that is right for me (6'-4"). I think it is about 32". I hate the low ones where you have to bend over to reposition. I just asked the question on what height the DHT is. I think it is a little lower than the huskee.
My opinion:
Standing straight you should be able to put your knuckles on the top of the beam.

That's too high. I would say standing straight you should be able to palm a 6-8 inch round.

I know its a matter of opinion, but try mocking it up sometime. I actually did and found my above statement to be true (for me).

The Huskee 22 tn beam is 31 inches high. That is 2" short of me knuckling the beam. I have used homemade splitters that are around 24" - way too short for me.
I have the huskee and am 6-4 as well. I do like the height, taller=better. That said, I basically operate in vertical mode almost all of the time. But I DONT use one of them stinkin milk crates, I use a 5 gallon bucket (it's taller for me long legs)
