So tonight I get a call from the woodman and he says" I want to deliver tomorrow" and I reply " No thanks, I need to cancel my order". I am moving within the next 2-6 months or so... I have plenty of wood for this winter and already have 2 cord for next (which I will be selling). I don't think my new house (wherever it will be ) will have a decent wood heater so I may have to settle for pellets for now and add a stove later.

Kinda felt like I cheated on a loved one...

Mixed feelings.... Good luck with the move. Pellets ain't that bad, though not as pretty to burn.
 
I agree.. My stove is in my basement so I don't get to enjoy the flames as much as I want... So I won't be missing much. I usually get too hot in the same room as it is a bit stove...agh. Sad sad situation.
And pellet stoves are so damn expensive! Not to mention I will need a generator in case we lose power. Agh.

All true, but there are some good deals in the Spring on used pellet stoves, and with a little help from the Pellet forum you'll be on your way. though hunting, pricing, and getting the pellets home is a job in of itself, though comparable to getting firewood.
 
Tar sands?? just kidding. my parents house is in the same boat. oil, propane or electric, all very expensive and on their limited retirement income, pellets fit quite nicely.
 
Not whatsoever, I work for the federal government and am transfering,

Pellets seem to be roughly the same cost of wood. The initial cost may be a bit more. The stove costs more but I don't need a $1200 chimney. Plus to get a nice constant heat like a pellet stove puts out, it need to get a cat stove and those are easily $3000.
 
I have been surprised just how cheap pellet heat can be. It's more like a furnace than a stove but it is cheap if you have to buy firewood anyway.
 
A pellet stove is a wood furnace. It has many common components with a high-efficiency furnace. And it is noisier than a wood stove, just like a furnace is. The noise is probably my main objection, but ours was in the living room. If it is in a more remote location then that would not be as big a deal.
 
That is part of my problem. I currently don't have a wood supply. I buy my hardwood and cut my own softwood from my property. Where I plan on moving I likely won't have any wood supply on my land at all. So instead of spending $800 on wood and all the work, why not pour a bag of pellets in a hopper and give it a try.....my wife will be able to work the machine and we can have a more stable temperature.
 
Gonna derail.....I like my heat pump. In my next life I will build a 1200 sq/ft(r40 walls and r-60 ceilings) ranch with Hp's and maybe a wood stove or pellet stove in the middle.
 
Heat pumps are horrible, we freeze every winter, if it wasn't for a old and poorly installed wood burning insert we wood freeze to death!!! Looking to up grade to a freestanding high efficiency stove but just don't have any resource in my area about installing it!
 
My next house will have a heat pump. They are efficient until about -7. After that I will have electricity and a pellet/wood stove to supplement. 2 kids and a busy career make for wood burning a little tricky right now. lol.

That sounds like a modern mini-split system. If so it's a whole different animal from some of the old systems. Of course if the house is leaking heat like a sieve, it's going to be hard to heat regardless of source. A lot of overkill wood stove installations are compensating for poor sealing and insulation.

Yes, mini split indeed. Something along the lines of 2X 3 ton ones. Considering I would only need to heat the house with electricity 4-5 months a year, pellets and electricity could do the rest.

Good luck with the move. I'm curious where you'll be moving to? I'll stay tuned. Nfld. wouldn't be a bad choice although it would be just as rural as the area around Gaspe. J'espere que vous aimerais le nouveau village (with apologies to my high school French teacher).

Thanks for the well wishes.

Right now it looks as though it will be NS or NB. THe only reason I am not overly interested in Newfoundland is because whenever I would want to come visit family (1-2 a year) it's along car ride + ferry or airplane tickets. And that can get somewhat expensive quickly.

HOw was the summer in Trinity?

Hi Andrew,

Best wishes on your move. If you wind up in southern NB that could put you close to home. Yes, it's expensive to get on and off the Rock. Good thing we do it only every 6 months. Lovely summer here in Trinity if you discount August.......too much rain. September is starting out well.
