Got Shorted by my firewood Dood

Yesterday I ordered and had delivered a "cord" of seasoned/split firewood.

After getting it all stacked, I measured my stacks. I only come out with 100 CF of wood. That means I am short more than a fifth of a cord. and at 250$ a cord I am out 50$. I am having my wife make the call... she always seems to get farther with negotiating than I do...

Do be careful and measure your wood.
 
I bet the moisture is over 25% too
 
Glad I had a MUCH better experience with my firewood guy. First time I've ordered from him, but I got nearly two perfect cords and at abut a year old, I checked with the moisture meter and they are at about 18-22%. Very good stuff IMO. Especially for $130 a cord.
 
Well, I saw him out in December of last year splitting lumber. So I know that atleast some of it has been seasoned. Which is why I went with them, because the slightly cheaper companies had just split the wood in september.

I normally would not be buying wood, but as we just installed the stove a couple of weeks ago, I have not had a year to season my own stash yet.
 
Unfortunately, we are sometimes at the mercy of these guys when you are not around when they drop it off. I think some do not even really understand that seasoned has a definition.

I usually burn 4 cords per year. I had an experience last year where the guys showed up with the first 2 cords stacked nicely on the truck, no bark and crap mixed in. A great load of wood (4 cord price of $150/cord). He dumped that one right next to my storage area and was to bring the second load in the AM. I fiugred I did not need to be around for that one. Second load was absolutely chitty - tons of bark mixed in with barely seasoned wood. He must have just used the loader and scooped up a load from a fresher pile of split wood. Unfortunately, my wife gave him the other $300 before he left. I let him have an earful but it really did me no good.
 
Check your state regs. There is a stiff fine for shorting a cord in our state. If the guy is reputable he'll make the shortage up quickly.
 
My wife made the call. Apparently this is the "first" time, that this has ever happened... or the first time they were ever called out on it.

Unfortunately, in my neck of the not so woods. There are a lot of big spenders who would not stack and then measure their wood, and just accept what they are given as "right"
 
So, other than saying this is the first time it happened...what is he going to go, bring out some more wood?
 
Not a problem, I went with the Green Connection. They have a few different locations on the south shore. My wife said they were very "nice" on the phone and very appologetic about the problem. I know that in Mass you can report them to the measures and weights people, but I would have a hard time pleading my case with another cord of split green wood waiting to be stacked and seasoned that is right next to my stacked seasoned wood.

If you have a moisture meter and want to swing by and see what % my firewood is before you order let me know. :)
 
I just got two cords from chip tech for $450. Otherwise it's $250/cord. Seems mostly seasoned. Blackwood tree in Whitman is $200/cord but they just split that in August. They have log length for $80/cord.

No moisture meter here.
 
Hey, thanks for the info. I think Palaza and McDunough also do log length for about that. I will be ordering my log length load for next season in the coming weeks.

Mind if I ask where you are from?

Hanson. I'm going to have get log length next year to optimize the savings. I just got one of those ryobi splitters if you ever want to borrow. Got to get back outside now and finish stacking before the sun goes down. ;)
 
Thanks for the invite, I may take you up on that offer depending on what I get for log lengths.

I hear you on the stacking... I had the 4 month pregnant wifey out helping me stack last night... Tonight I think I will be working alone.
 
Glad everything seems to be going well. I got shorted by my firewood guy once, too. He swore he must have cut two cords of wood, but when it was all split and stacked it was less than a cord. The next time I saw him (next morning looking back at me in the bathroom mirror) I let him have it! Still haven't seen the extra wood show up!

That is the way the wood man here is. I lie to myself about how much wood is on the pile all of the time.
