I've got an old Vermont Castings Dutchwest Sequoia stove. The inner top plate wrapped and cracked
on me a year ago and I rebuilt the stove replacing the top plate. I discovered recently that the damper plate
has wrapped. Not a massive amount, but...no question, it is wrapped. Why?

That's my question. Why the wrap? What have I been doing wrong with my burns that I caused the damper to wrap? Would having too hot a fire cause that?

Last year, after rebuilding the stove I started with very small fires for the first few times. Gradually I built up to more "regular" fires. I would run it up to 900 to 1000 degrees and maintain it there.

I could put in more gasket material around the damper opening to provide a better seal due to the wrap, but
I've ordered a new damper plate and will replace it.

Last year I heated throughout the winter with the stove. (my LP gas man WAS NOT happy!!)

Thanks!

Ok first it is warp not wrap. And where are you getting 900 to 100 degrees? I have worked on allot of these with warped plates but to warp in a single season is not usual at all

Yes, I was going to "wrap" the "warped" damper and send it to you. Sorry. Couldn't resist. I'm reading the temp off the gauge on the top. What could be the reason for the damper to warp?

Those are extreme temps! for a cast stove! These stoves have a convection top don't they? An air gap between the inner and outer tops? 700 is the max temp you should have seen on a cast iron stove, a few temp spikes wouldn't be too big of a deal though. Are your gaskets good?

Gaskets were replaced during the rebuild. I'll definitely keep my temps lower this year and see how it performs.
That's all I can think of.....

Thanks!

Yeah 1000° is pretty scary.

Replace the warped damper plate and examine for other damage. This season keep the stove top temps below 800F.
