I emailed on the VC was told it's 8 years old but has only been used for three years. the jotul #8 seems a little high. anyone know if this is EPA compliant? What did the #8 become? roben.

$500 for a resolute acclaim is certainly a fair price if its in good condition. it would need to be checked out in person though.
i always wanted one but recently picked up a defiant encore cat stove to try running this winter. i believe elk used to have an acclaim and now has an intrepid II and defiant encore (both cat stoves) and likes them better as far as i remember.

Depends on the year for the Acclaim. There was a bad run of them in the 90's.
If the 8 TDIC is brand new as stated, it could be a good deal. The 8 TDIC is roughly equivalent to the Castine, but the F400 Castine is non-cat.
Both these stoves seem like a bit of overkill for your climate and house size.

Begreen is correct VC had a bad run using steel plates this was in the late 80's to early 90's if the stove has the redfactory concrete panels.
The refractory cement panels were the solution to cracking plates. VC even made retrofit panels for older stoves to solve the earlier problems

A new jotul wouldn't be that much more. If your looking to save some $$$$ why not take a look at Englander which is a low cost, high value. I have no personal experience with them, but they have good word of mouth here.
Thanks guys I think I will pass on those two. I will keep looking while I'm saving up for a new stove. I want a cast iron one for the looks and with all the reading I'm doing here and how different EPA stoves are from the smoke dragons I've always used, I think I should go with a small stove. Every time I read about what stove top temps you guys go to before secondary burn or engaging the cat I think I'd have temps in the mid 90s in my living like I do with my big schrader when it hits 500 degrees. I'm leaning toward a Jotul 3CB or a VC intrepid II. I enjoy the hunt as much as I enjoy the gathering at the end. :coolsmile: roben.
begreen, since you"ve used both the 3CB and castine which do you suggest? elk in VCs which would you suggest? thanks roben.
Roben, the Castine might work for you house and would give you longer burns on very cold nights, but 90% of the time it would be loafing. The 3CB is a great smaller stove but will not give overnight burns. Given the constraints of a small home in a mild climate zone, I think the VC Intrepid is the stove I would give first consideration.
if you have narrowed down your choice to these two stoves neither one will be a bad decision. GIVEN equal firebox size the cat VC with thematically controlled secondary air control will out preform the Jotul hands down .The Intrepid is not a new strove ,but a model perfected within a 20 year run. Again price will govern your final decision, but if concerned about being green, again the cat Intrepid wins that competition hands down.
Thanks guys, seems to me that a stove that I have to idle most of the time is not the way to go. I wouldn't even get to the secondary burn. I found a dealer that has VC intrepid IIs in stock $1745 in matte. I'll try to get by there so I can see one in person. There was one on craigslist for $150, it was gone in one day. however it said it had been used as an insert and had no legs. Made me leery! roben.
