I'm looking for the cheapest fire retardent rug. Doesn't have to be beautiful.
I can google it all day long, but I'm just wondering if anybody knows which material might be the cheapest.

We have used rugs made of Olefin (polypropylene) as hearth rugs with good success. The material will melt if you get a hot coal on it, but it won't ignite, or at least ours never have. I was tending a fire in the middle of the night in our old insert once and a coal must have popped out and landed on the rug. There was a melted spot that I found the next morning, but the backing of the rug was not damaged and neither was the laminate flooring beneath it. The current runner we have in front of the woodstove only cost about $15 I think and we picked it up at Lowe's a couple of years ago.

That's kinda where I was going with this- where can I go besides the internet and get one cheap.
I was thinking Lowes and TSC.
Thanks Nick.

Is this rug just for looks or is it a substitute for meeting hearth requirements? We have one made out of wool, but it is mostly for the cat and not required. Our hearth easily meets spec. FWIW, I would not get a hearth rug made of plastic. Consider a hearth rug made out of fiberglass instead.

Is a hearth rug sufficient substitute for a brick hearth? Is a hearth pad?
Brick hearth is raised about 10" from the laminate wood floor. nc30 sits atop brick hearth.
Manual says it needs 16" from face of stove. I'm about 12" short.

A hearth pad is a safer bet. It will be non-combustible and can be screwed down in a couple corners to stop it from moving. They make hearth pad extensions for this purpose that are 18" deep.

+1 on begreen's assertion, that's a really good idea.

I think the Canada standard is 18 or 20" in front of the stove compared to 16" USA spec. As built I have 22" of hearth in front of my door frame and I get poppers all the way off the hearth out onto the carpet a couple times a week.

The worst time is loading fresh wood onto a bed of hot coals. The first stick I put in gets to popping and I can't really close the door until I finish loading the stove.

With that ten inch elevation you got anything flying out will get a little bit further out because it has farther to fall before it stops if you know what I mean.
