Went yesterday to pick up some free wood and noticed logs were ash. They were bucked up in 5' sections all about 12-14" diameter. This tree was cut that day and those sections were heavy and very wet. I have never cut fresh Ash but I thought they would be a little lighter. Is this normal? The only Ash I have had been hung up in a tree for a bit so it had very light rounds.
 
5' sections 13" in diameter are heavy.
 
Looked like a younger tree. Wood seemed like it was dripping wet. Probably let em set a few weeks before bucking and splitting.

Agreed. My neighbor had a bunch of ash trees taken down last month that were either dead or dying from EAB. They were all in 5' sections, and ranged from 12" to 18" diameter. I went over to get them about 2 weeks after they were cut, and even after bucking them to 16" they were all fairly heavy. My wife was the one loading them in the wagon as I cut, and she was cursing me the entire time, but refused help. I honestly don't know how she picked up some of the larger pieces.
 
I know the feeling! I asked the guy if I needed to bring my saw to cut anything and he said everything was pretty well cut up. I sould of asked should I bring a buddy to help lift em. Probably got a hernia from liftin those bastards!

Most fresh cut wood is pretty damn heavy, regardless of species. No need to wait to buck and split, the sooner it gets split the sooner it'll dry

Roll them bad boys end over end if you can't cut em. I'd usually buck them about 1/2 that size. Are they reserved for you, or free for anybody? Free wood goes fast around here this time of year.

The only heavy wet ash I ever came across dried to light as a feather quick because it was willow.

I did buck some up tonight. Will split tomorrow. It was all free from CL. Got a load of Wh oak and hickory tonight so will start splitting tomorrow so I keep ahead.

could be Mountain Ash- about a 1/2 step different than willow
 
It's green ash. Bark and leaves were on site with the wood.
 
Ash is what I primarily burn since we have so much dead around here
 
Scrounge where I can. Have a guy letting me cut in his woods. He has all hickory white oak and ash everywhere.
