If this topic has already been discussed please point me to the thread.

I am helping a buddy install a new pellet stove. He wants to place it on his existing fireplace hearth, which will need to be built out a little, and vent up the existing brick Chimney. Does anyone know, is there a special kit to do this? Does the new vent pipe have to go all the way up the chimney or can you route it up so far and let the existing chimney be the vent? I know we will need to build a draft blocker since the Flue will always be open now, I am just not sure if there is a particular type of venting for a brick chimney.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm doing something similar - actually installing a chimney liner tomorrow! You can read about my experiences here:

Our St Croix is installed this way and yes, we went all
the way up the chimney and terminated with a cap. We bought all the piping parts separately
which consisted of a stove pipe adapter, a foot of 3" simpson duravent
into a 4" cleanout T with a 3" connecting branch, a 4" flex to rigid connector,
4" ss pellet flex pipe, and a ss chimney cap. Here are a few pictures.

Thanks for the advice.
Has anyone ever seen anyone go straight back through the chimney wall? This is a chimney on an exterior wall. I was thinking an option also may be to knock out some brick and go through the back of the fireplace with a cleanout Tee on the outside, just like you would on a regular wall with direct venting. This is a pellet stove not a wood stove so I was wondering if this would be concidered acceptable.

Zeta, make sure you take that wd-40 off the mantel before you fire her up.

personally i have mine direct connected at the thimble but im venting into a 6" SS lined flue, were it to have been a fireplace with a much larger cross section or an 8" flue then i would have done virtually a twin of ZETA's install. with the 6"though it works very well, have had no problems at all.

My install was to reline the 8" block chimney with 4" PV pipe. Install was 1 T and 2 90's and about 17 feet of pipe.

I put my install on the draft gauge last night and no matter what the stove motor blows the draft is .75

Guess that natural draft will help in a power outage....maybe I could have gone 3" but the manual said 4" if your over 3k feet and I'm darn close to that.

LOL. That photo was taken in Oct 2005. The wd40 wasn't
there when we fired her up, but even if it was it's
about 3 feet from any portion of the stove that gives
off heat. The pic is deceiving. It appears closer I know.
