Feeling the Heat

Yesterdays haul should give me about 12 cords total, usually burn 10 from Oct. to Mar. I think I'll keep going if my son will help for another day or so. We found a valley nearby with about 50 standing dead Fir 12-14 in buts. P1010264.jpgP1010264.jpgP1010263.jpgP1010265.jpg

How deep is that shed or is there some in another pile? "Keep going and feed the addiction", I say :)

Never Enough. never know when there will be a drought.

That's what I was thinking! Where are you? Is wood your only heat source?

BC Canada can get pretty cold. If I recall correctly that's an area with more softwood. But yes, 10 cords per year is a tremendous amount!

The house is 4000 shop is 2800 wood shed is 20ft deep . Winters are not as cold as the mid west , but I seem to use 10 cord. Each row in the shed is 5ft wide splits are 2ft long piled 7-8 ft high lasts 1 week in winter.

If you've got two stoves and a frigid climate I could definitely see that.

Nice wood pile. 'You can never have enough'

Any Tamarack in your area?

Its amazing how diverse our province is. My parents can be 10 c on Vancouver Island and in the east kootenays it can be -25 c. When they are -5 we can be down right frigid! You get the idea, of course the northern part of the province is an entirely different ball of wax. Thats a huge amount of wood! Good for you to be able to process that amount. Nice looking wood shed, and stacks!! You have some great btu wood there! I processed some Larch and fir today after work but it was nothing like that!

That's a lot of area to heat, that's more than 3 times the area we heat and I go through about 4 cords a year, so I can see it.

We need to get one more load for the year and we'll be done. The shed will be full and we'll have a cord of so extra that will get us started into the winter.
All of it is Lodgepole. ;)

No Tamarack unfortunately , my brother inlaw lives in the Cranbooke area and burns Tamarack, very hot wood. We are in the Kamloops area mostly Fir and Pine , the beetle kill Pine is on the ground now but the tusic moth killed Fir is still standing.

Fiskars X25 + sneakers = accident waiting to happen (ask me how I know)

Awesome wood shed btw...

That young guy looks to be about the same age as my grandson, it would scare the he** out of me watching that.

Or some eye protection?! Obviously more is better when it comes to caution, but I would rather go through life with a scar on my foot and both eyes working well than intact feet and one eye.

Very nice neat operation, easy clean up doing it on the driveway. I like the load on the Ford stacked neatly like that it has to be close to a full cord.

Nice pics Lumber jack. I look forward to when my son can split wood (hes 9 now). I split wood as a kid and never hurt myself. You cant protect them from everything folks! Love your wood sheds as always.

Okay you asked....
Want to see some pictures of me splitting with my fiskars in sandals?

Once upon a time during a cookout at my parents house I was splitting up some wood for the outdoor firepit. Of course there was booze involved....it was a pool party! The maul glanced off the wood and came right at my feet. Did I mention I was bare foot????

Thankfully it was just a glancing blow and all I ended up with was a good bruise and a scrape. But an inch in the other direction would have been a trip to the emergency room. Had it been a Fiskars it would have been a ride in an ambulance.

I learned two lessons that day. Don't play with sharp things when you're on the sauce.....and safety gear is your friend.

I remember last year or the year before a member here mentioned the idea of steel toed slippers. It was in fun I believe but the idea sounds great! I instantly saw the value in the idea.

Thanks Sean. My boys have been splitting wood for a few years now and they can out split most adult men, however the one in the picture actually did cut his hand about 4 years ago while splitting kindling, and yes he was wearing gloves, the Fiskars sliced right through the glove. The cut was deep enough that it required a trip to the emergency to get some stitches. I posted pictures about it in this forum when it happened. He did learn from the experience, changed the way he splits kindling and I seriously doubt it will ever happen again, but I fully expect that he will get hurt again doing something, I just wish I could predict before hand exactly what it will be, then I could loosen the reigns on the other stuff a little more. Funny thing is this boy has a number of scars on his body already, from his kindling accident, to a kidney operation he had when he was 9, but the biggest most visible scar he has was from an accident he had over at a friends place when he fell on their exercise treadmill. Unfortunately he forgot to wear any safety gear before getting on the treadmill. :p

EDIT: There is a way of swinging a maul that prevents it from coming through and hitting your feet (or chins). I mentioned it before it this forum as well, but it didn't get much attention. My boys have been taught this method of swinging the maul, and by the way he his postured in the picture I can tell he is doing it correctly. My thinking is it is wiser to rely on proper swinging technique than steel toes boots. ;)

Yep, I figure it to be at least a full cord on the truck. We drive a fair distance to the spot we get our wood, so we try to make sure the truck is full. It's easy pickings when we get there so the drive distance is worth it. That load only took us two hours to fall all the trees and load the truck.

I thought I should try the new wood to see how it burns, as I don't have a MM. Filled the boiler within 10 min had a 475 flue , no smoke and a 2.5 hr burn. Moisture is good , we are going to be nice and warm this winter.P1010270.jpgP1010266.jpgP1010267.jpgP1010268.jpg
