So let me get this straight,,,, you are saying, instead of your chimney going out the wall and up toward the roof, it goes out the wall and down into a metal barrel?

Nice work.

That is exactly what the Garn installation manual says to do, but I am thinking about changing it to vertical because the first 10-15 minutes of the burn there is some smoke and I have to wash the side of the shed in the spring.

Must be power vented? Almost has to be...

Maybe a T with a bypass, up for start up, then switch to down?

Could you use this method to reclaim some heat for another purpose??? Otherwise, i just can't envision the rewards being worth "the troubles"... to be honest, I've never seem anything like this.

Yup, I looked at the Garn OM (page 27), they use a blower, so it apparently doesn't need a standard chimney, although a chimney can be used if ya want...so basically, it appears this method of discharge into a barrel is a poor mans chimney/spark arrestor that is a optional discharge method on the Garns. Learn something new everyday!

If I could have used my original chimney I would have hooked it up to go vertical. I'm not overly sold on the horizontal vent for the smoke at start up and the condensate that is dripping on my floor from the seams in the chimney.
