What kind of nuts are these? Kinda look like some type of hickory nut almost, but if it is its not a shag bark hickory cause i know what them look like. Do Beech trees get nuts? Never seen these type nuts til today.

Beech tree's get nuts but they have a prickly husk on them and their small, I think you have Bitter nut hickory or pig nut hickory. Here's a link http://www.wikihow.com/Identify-Hickory-Trees
JayD i think you're right,it's bitter nut since it has the same ridges on the husk. First one i ever ran across in wisconsin.

The ones that still have the covering on them kinda look like the ones that fall off my black walnut trees I have here

We have quite a few here in Lower mi they grow along the rivers and flood plains, If their here I sure you have them in wisconsin. All it take is one nut and a flying squirrel

Im sure they're not black walnuts as im familiar with them. These nuts are about the size of a quarter. Guess i should have put some size scale in the picture.

agreed - definitely not black walnuts. BW nuts in the rind look more like small green oranges and the husk is softer and very fragrant. Also - if they were BW your hands would be stained brown from handling the ripe husks.
Those look like mockernut hickory to me. I've got too many of them in my yard..along with an overabundance of squirrels and mice that live easy off all the mast.

Bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis) is the "northern hickory" in my experience. Associated often with maple-beech-basswood types, which I'd guess you have a fair bit of given your location.

I agree it is some type of Hickory. Definitely not Beechnuts (not even close), and not Black Walnuts.

It sure looks like a hickory, likely bitternut. Best way to tell is to open one up and taste the nutmeat. If it is bitternut, it will be as if you tasted pure quinine - it will be the most bitter think you have ever tasted in your life.
