TC-W3 as Bar and Chain Oil?

Hi All,
I'm a new registered user of the forum, but I've been a lurker for quite some time. I have a LOT of TC-W3 two stroke oil from when me and my pals had snowmobiles....my question is, can I use it as bar and chain oil? Isn't two stroke oil the same weight as SAE 30? What if I cut it with Bar and Chain Oil? Say 3 Quarts TC3 to 1 Quart B&C?
 
?? I wouldn't risk it on a good bar and chain, but I'm sure it will work. The 2 stroke oil will sling off faster and probably not have the same protection.
 
I wouldn't use it for bar and chain oil. Some people like to use TCW3 as a fuel additive in their vehicles, that would probably be a better way to use it up. Otherwise you could probably get a few bucks for it on Craigslist. If no one wants to buy it, you could definitely get rid of it for free on Craigslist.

Or, you could buy a boat. :D
 
Bar oil is designed to be sticky so it stays where its needed longer. I repurpose many clean lubricants as bar and chain oil but only when I'm using my "sacrifice bar and chains" for demolition cutting and such.
 
OK, thanks all good advice. Its an old bar and chain so I guess it doesn't really matter, but I think I'll use it as a fuel additive, did some research and it seems to work wonders on your vehicle.
 
I use TCW3 at every fill-up of my diesel truck. It definitely quieted down my buddy's diesel truck. It sounded like a washing machine full of bricks when running. Now it just sounds like a washing machine full of well tumbled bricks.
 
If it is a bar and chain you do not care about then by all means use it. If not then try to use something a little thick so it does not fly everywhere
 
I like a mixture of gear lube and automatic trans fluid and anything in between...sometimes I buy bar oil sometimes I mix many different automotive lubricants haven't noticed a difference.
Have heard of people using cooking oil and motor oil even used motor oil (which I would never use because of abraisives)

I'd do it in a pinch but certainly wouldn't make a habit of it

I read the same about adding it to diesel fuel, back when I had my 6.uh-oh Powerstroke. Never tried it personally
 
I guess I am one of the lucky ones and have a 6.oh-yeah. No issues with it, but I have been scrupulous about maintenance. Most expensive thing I have had to do to it is put tires on it.
 
Mine ran great, until I hit about 145K, then it was HPOP and a few things related to that. Then, the FICM and a few injectors, alt and batteries etc. 2 separate huge repair bills in 1 year, both over 3 grand. Second was 3 weeks before Xmas, CFO said thats enough. I loved that truck, my favorite of all I ever owned

Using used cooking or motor oil is something I wouldn't recommend unless it was filtered, don't need foreign matter clogging the nozzle/port.
 
No, it is way way too thin. I buy TCW3 by the gallon for the powerstroke and refill little half pint bottles with it. I pour a lot of it and know it is almost as thin as water.

I also buy bar oil by the gallon and refill quart bottles for convenience. That stuff is uber thick in comparison.

It's not just about the bar and chain. You could also ruin your oil pump on the saw. Sure, in a pinch it is better than urine but I wouldn't do that to my saws on purpose.
 
I've heard of guys using beer for brake fluid to come off the mountain when without some type of fluid they would have had no brakes. Sometimes you just need to use what you've got.

Yeah but I was just being lazy, for $10 a gallon at walmart I'll buy more. The Reason I also asked is because I backed over my almost full gallon of bar oil with my truck and lost it all on the ground and was pis*ed off and didn't want to buy more.....but I'll use the crap load of tc3 as a fuel additive seems like a much better use
 
I just opened a gallon of 30W bar oil I picked up at WalMart and used it the other day. First impression it seems a lot thinner (?) than the gallon of Husky oil I just finished up. Maybe its just me?
 
I guess I'll just use it up over the winter and not buy that any more. I'll keep an eye on oil usage vs gas. Might alternate tank to tank with Husky/Stihl B&C oil, depending on my findings. Think it would hurt to mix some and test it? One way to find out I suppose
