Ok, ive always used a shop vac, one everything was DEAD cold and out. Really think I want a ash vac now to keep from breathing in the crud.

Don't want to spend a ton of $$, but something decent, even if its small. Ive seen small Shop Vac brand, cheetahs, etc...

What does everybody here use ?

I see the Shop vac version, with a heppa filter at lowes. Manly use it 2 times a year, . My regular shop vac is really dying, never used the heppa, and the ash is in the motor.
 
This a cheapie wet/dry from Home depot...
2/half gallon.. easy to carry around since I didn't need or want a 5 gallon jobber that would take a year to fill up.
sock/clamp to catch dust that get's past the paper filter extra..works as well as any other.
I have a OCD wife and if she saw any ash dust in the living room, I would have heard about it.
So the Thick White sock ash dust collector works..

If I was going to get a new vac it would b the cheetah
 
$230 bucks keeps your money in the USA
 
What's the real difference between a $100 power smith and a $200 dustless tech cheetah and the $250 cougar? Is it worth the extra for any reason?

I did. I bought the Powersmith and the extra money is sitting in my wallet. In Virginia.

I love that thing.

I also bought a power smith. I bought mine for $90 on Amazon. If you have a store named benny's near you they sell them for $70.

I looked at how much money I was going to save using the pellet-corn stove and spent 220.00 on the cheetah. I am not worried about burning the place up and I wait until the stove shuts down before I clean. I dump the ash bucket in a safe container because if there were any hot sparks that is where it will be. I have owned the cheetah for over ten years and have replaced the cloth filters once so it has given me good service. I also have a friend who is a retired fireman. He bought a cheap plastic shop vac with hepa filters- set it out in his driveway when he was done. One morning the metal pieces were all that was left. He ordered a cheetah the next day. Operator error , yeah but he was also sucking out the ash bucket and that was where the hot embers were.

Thanks. I bet the need for an actual ash vac, but the difference in price in the ash favs is what I'm more curious about
 
I use a Shop Vac as well with the yellow filter bag (for fine particles/ash) and the HEPA cartridge filter. I vacuum almost daily (cold ash only of course) and one 5-8 gallon filter bag lasts me nearly 1/2 a burn season before it fills up and needs replacement. No issues with ash in the motor as the bag/HEPA filter combination keeps the inside of the Shop Vac clean.

Mine is called Hearth Country model 400. The dealer promotion threw this in on my Harman purchase so I'm sure its a cheapo. It sucks out the ash and doesn't blow dust everywhere. What more is it supposed to do than that ? I shake the filter out periodically and put it back in vac , still on the original filter. So I bought my Harman last winter, missed the fed savings program by a few days and missed Harmans $250 off program. Did get the $100 off promotion and a free vac though.

Actually, the Hearth Country 400 sells for about $120.00
I bought mine from Woodland Direct.

Loveless Ash Vac
 
I picked up a Powersmith for something like $72 2 years ago from Blaine's Fleet and Farm. I use it almost every day since I'm fanatical about a clean stove. It works great as long as you make sure the filter is seated correctly after you empty it (which I only do maybe every 3 weeks or so). There has been one or two times that is wasn't seated correctly and blew soot out into the room.
Just got a Cleva thrown in for free when I bought another stove so after the second stove is hooked up (hopefully later today) I'll be able to have a comparison.
I've heard the Cheetah is good, I just didn't have 3 times the money to spend on an ash vac when I bought it.
