This happens every year. The first fire stinks. I have an old Buck 28000 insert. Is it off gassing paint fumes every year? I believe its original paint. Does this happen to everyone?

Absolutely. I think it's dust and other particulate that is one the stove and gets hot.

I hadn't had a fire in over a week, and had to smell the dust burning off again.

My guess is the paint on the old Buck is pretty well cured.

Burnt dust, that familiar smell every fall. Or fuel oil first firing and dusting through duct work.
I'll take the wood burning burnt dust smell, along with the small amount of smoke from the reverse draft at warmer outside temps.

Yes, first fire last weekend. I think it was a combination of dust and some paint fumes. I get the same smell every year from the furnace and hot water piping when they are fired up. Part of the fall ritual!

Normal smell when we turn on the heat first time. Dust

My house smells like a wet soccer field (wet mud) the first fire of every year. The penalty for installing in an old masonry fireplace made from mud-stacked rubble walls.

edit: That was actually years past, before I started using GoldenRod dehumidification heaters in each fireplace. I wonder if it will smell this year?
