Gonna process this small white oak this weekend. I've still got another cord or so to cut for 2016. Love the smell of white oak, can't beat it

You got that right, bud! There are others that smell good but I think I like White Oak the best. Even better is when it has been sitting around for a while; The aroma is intoxicating! () I've got a couple to get that have been down for several years, really looking forward to that. It'll be slow going, though; I'll be spending as much time sniffing as I will splitting. ;lol

Very nice! I don't mind red oak, but white oak just smells incredible!

My favorite as well. I don't have any right now in the processing pile either. :(

My coyote population is getting out of hand and I think thats why I rarely see turkeys anymore but they at least keep the turkeys from eating all the acorns. The red Oaks are taking over the white oaks as they must grow at a faster rate.
Ive been watching 2 trees compete for sunlight at the edge of my field and the Red Oak is winning out.
If I can property ID a white Oak I dont touch it. I try to keep them as seed trees.

Round leaf tips/lobes is white of some sub-species or another. Pretty simple as they typically have some leaves year round.

I think that's probably true and I'm sad to ever lose a White, even though I'm getting some great wood. Fortunately, I have plenty of dead trees to cut so I can let the live ones keep growing. >>

Well it was growing in a wad with a couple more so I decided to take one of them. Im lucky enough that My land is full of white, water and pin oak
My yard has quite a few sugar maples and they're crowding each other out too. I want to do the same and thin them out and let the ones I leave to grow better. The thing is I keep thinking if I wait another year the tree will be bigger and I'll get more firewood but I think I'm going to knock down 3-4 this fall.

Ok you guys have convinced me to take down my first white oak it is a very large tree dead standing for 4 years now at the end of our driveway. Only thing is it is close to the power lines so I will try to get N Star elect. to take it down. I have many dead standing whites back in the woods but have not made it that far back yet to cut and everything here around the house are dead standing Red Oak. If I cut from the house back it would take me years to make it back to the whites. I have my logging road cut and clear about half way back so maybe this winter I will take it to the end of the property ( 3/4 mile + ).

Yeah, I need to start managing my woodlot a bit, too. For starters I'll probably get a couple of White Ash that are crooked and taking resources that nearby Hickories and Whites could use. I figure the White Ash are doomed anyway, once the borer gets here. :(

That red oak smell reminds me of an x-girl friend, She would always drink wine ( I hate the smell of wine, reminds me of dirty socks) so when I would cut red oak and smell that odor I would think of her and just start cutting faster, felt good lol.
