How much wood is this?

I was driving to work yesterday and saw several "free firewood" signs in a yard on a major road here. I tossed and turned in bed all night wondering if it would still be there this morning. I called into work and told them I'd be late, got in the 'ol pickup and went and scored 2 loads of oak. Anybody have a rough estimate of how many cords in a pickup?

I am officially in enrolled in "Scroungers Anonymous" now!! :cheese:

As is, of course, the case with all species of wood, the density of oak depends on the moisture content, but just for the sake of a swag, let's say the oak you got weighs about 45 lbs/cu ft. That means a cord (128 cu ft) would weigh nearly 5800 lbs. If you really did have a 1/2 cord in the bed of your pickup, that would mean you're carrying nearly a ton and a half.
 
I estimate about 1/3 cord.
 
A cord is supposed to be 4'x4'x8' of stacked wood which is 128 cubic feet. Measure the volume of your truck bed and as a pretty close guess, that is how many cubic feet of wood you got give or take a bit. Then divide by 128 and that is the fraction of a cord you got.

A narrow-bed Ford Ranger holds 1/3-cord. Your load is 1/2 cord. Should weigh a little more than a ton, depending.
 
My Vote = 1/2 Cord
(Nice find- no wonder you lost sleep, I would have gone to get it in the middle of the night.)
 
LOL, imagine losing sleep over something that's free and isn't even yours to begin with. %-P You got the wood bug! Welcome to the club, I say a half a cord too, of oak!, nice score. After you split and stack it let us know.
 
I was terrified because last year (before I got my stove, of course), a friend cut down a huge oak in his yard. He put it on craigslist and there were 3 or 4 pickup trucks in his driveway in a few hours.
 
I've scrounged wood with my 2007 F150. I've actually split it at the site and hauled the splits home. My 6.5 foot bed slightly heaped up with wood after three trips stacked just over a measured cord. My vote not quite half a cord but more than a third.
