Tackled my entry gate and deer fence project finally. I agonized and procrastinated over the design and installation all summer but finally it had to be done. The posts are set in a ton of cement and all except for one are also thru-bolted to a concrete curb. They are solid. It's not the most beautiful thing, but a lot better than the temporary fencing we've put up with for the past couple years.

How large an area does it enclose?
We've gone on some Garden Conservancy tours where there are nice fences surrounding a lot of land. A lot of those places have deep pockets though.
 
Yes, this gets pricey real quickly, especially with 6" posts. Our pockets are not deep.The total perimeter is about an acre. Most of it is done with black poly heavy deer fence and homemade pvc piping gates. One is visible in the background.
 
I just shooed away a couple deer; my wife says deer repellent has been working well enough so far.

What do you use for posts for the majority? Staple to trees as well?

Not sure what pac piping is?

Those fences I mentioned looked like your fence in the picture, only it enclosed acre$.
 
Deer are too heavy here to not have a fence. The rest of the yard has turned into a minefield from them. Worst it's ever been. The fence posts are mostly black angle iron and some 10' heavy garden posts in between. It's only attached to trees in a couple places.

That should be pvc piping. One gate is at the background left side here.

Looks good to me! It's getting so I'll have to do that here, but for a much smaller area.
 
How about eating them until they no longer come around?

Hunting is not my thing, though I did toy briefly with the idea of a giant trebuchet. I gave permission to a hunter to take what he wanted last year. No success so now I have 3-4 generations from fertile Myrtle running around.
 
I grow trees. Deer aka woods rats. Woods rats eat small trees which can't then grow into big trees. I eat deer. Season opens Nov 8. One less deer. Woods rats win.
 
Yes, I have lost a fair amount of trees, shrubs and plants to the suckers. A deer fence is the only way we have made peace. Though now there are so many of them hanging out in our yard that it is a deer turd minefield.
 
Don't tempt me. The thought has crossed my mind.
 
We bought a motion detection sprinkler to deter deer near our garden.
Sadly, we haven't tried it yet because we didn't get a garden in this year. :(
 
Deer breeched the fence several times last year. I got one of those last year and it worked. But it only covers and area of about 40 ft. and we have an acre or so to protect. I finally got all of their sneaky entry points under the fence fixed and have only had one breach this year. Mom was teaching the kids how to break in. That was a tired section of fence that they had worked on last year. Yes, they will chew through a small hole to enlarge it.

I think it is very attractive and I am known for my opinion on such things.

It does look nice. Dune's post made me take a 2nd look and I realized that its very similar to my deck guardrails. upload_2014-10-11_16-40-41.jpeg
