Today's plan was to do the yearly top down chimney cleaning. Well the rain didn't stay south of us and it was 40 this morning. So I decided to reverse the procedure I have been doing for 15 years. That is clean the inside of the stove before getting on the roof to sweep. To my amazement, I found about a large pile chips in the stove's top rear shelf, below chimney. About half the amount of what I thought I would sweep down with the brush. Was this accumulated during the last burning season? Or has the fallen down during the summer months?

Something to pay attention to. If this pile accumulated it should be cleaned out during the burn season.

Any one ever see this?

The sky cleared by 1PM so I got on the roof and ran the brush down. Yep about half of what I normally get.

The Oslo you see in my avatar is ready to go. Just in time it's going to be 30 something tonight.

HAPPY BURN SEASON TO ALL

Yeah, baby, light up that Oslo! I am getting one next year, can't wait.

I've had creosote slough off both my clay tile liner on one stove and off single wall pipe of another stove during periods when I wasn't burning. So, I would say it's possible your stuff came off during the summer. However, it could also have been dropping off last burn season and you weren't aware of it. On my Jotul F 600 I can remove two bolts and lift the top of the stove off to inspect my baffle and flue collar. I don't think the Oslo has this feature, but perhaps you can use a mirror and light and occasionally take a look to see if any flaky stuff is accumulating in this area during the burning season. If you are getting a pile in there while you're burning that would be a bad place to have a pile of creosote to fire off during a burn!
