Thats it boys. The wood heater has been retired for 2014. Got a few months of outdoor fires to clean up the yard before fire restrictions kick in. I look forward to seeing more of you guys starting to burn!!!

Wow :) So how was it? Typical? How'd the stove and your fuel supply work out?

As my first burning season is about to start, wondering if there's anything you'd do differently now that you can look back on yours.

My Father always dreamed of moving to Australia someday, beautiful country.

How cold does it get there? What kind of wood do you burn, eucalyptus?

i live in the mountains about an hour from melbourne. We don't get hardcore snow, but definitely get sleet and frost...over night it will drop below 0 and during the day will be around 8 degrees celsius....cold enough to warrant having a fire!

I burn anything too, anything I can scrounge...(within reason)...haha..but yes, predominantly eucalyptus. we get awesome hardwoods like red gum and yellow box..i took down a few black woods from my back yard and that has been awesome to burn...i even have a big pile of split pine i am about to stack today....i will use that in a year or two...just to mix it up a bit...

G'day! Lived in Christchurch for a year about 20 years ago, but never did make it over to the West Island. ;)

I do recall that most everyone heated with wood. Made for pretty dirty air whenever there was an inversion. Can't remember what folks primarily burned when I was there, but probably a lot of Radiata Pine, and Manuka if they could get it.

It seems like some of y'alls ancestors would have brought over a pocket full of acorns from England, and you could be burning oak!

Funny to hear that you are just done burning, I am just itching to start with our weather inching towards winter. Will be burning 2 year old ash and maybe some oak. You must be coming into spring and summer, what kind of beer do you drink down there?
Kevin

Gum! Ouch! If it's the same stuff we call Gum around here it is almost impossible to split.

I tried to split some Georgia sweet gum, my maul just bounced off. Harder to split than hickory. Impossible to split by hand.
