The title may sound like an oxymoron but it makes some sense. I purchased a quadra-fire stove off Craig's list and when I got it home, a month ago, noticed that the label on the back with all the identification was missing. At the time I started comparing features of the stove with the various quadra-fire manuals and determined it was a 4300.

Now as I prepare to install it and have it permitted I realize that the inspector might consider it an un-certified wood stove and so the required clearances would all be different. Even worse I have read here that the insurance company may not cover the damage if there were a fire since it lacks the label. What do others know about this?

If I hauled it in to a quadra-fire dealer could they certify it? Can I convince the inspector that it really is a quadra-fire 4300 or would he even be authorized to make that determination?

Thanks for any info.

You are in limbo here. I've never heard of a stove being re-certified, as the UL tags aren't easy to come by to re-apply to the stove.

That said, if you can prove what you are working with is the stove that fits that manual, and it is installed as per the requirements in that manual, I suppose it comes down to the willingness of the insurance company to accept what you did.

For my home, the insurance company never looked twice at the stove and only charge me an extra 25 bucks a year for having it, although they did take a few measurements to combustibles. I called them years back to tell them I installed a new stove and all they said was "thank you for the call" and never set up an appointment to come back and check anything out.

Point is, if what you have is what you say it is, then it really comes down to them being OK with it as a unit, whether the tag is there or not.

good luck.

I have no clue about the recertification. When we bought our home I was working evenings. The insurance guy came by which I had forgot about him being scheduled to come by. I opened the front door with an attitude adjuster behind my back startled 1) because we live in a town where the good citizens ran the only cop around...out (NO MANS land) and 2) I was dead asleep. He apologized for waking me and never stepped foot in the house. I opened the door wide opened and apologized to him and he said he didn't need to see anything inside. And there's no way he couldn't have missed the 10 ft. stainless pipe.

Idk if that's uncommon for them to come in or not. First time home buyer.

I called and talked with an inspector today and he first said that without a label he would need to use the Mass. state guidelines for clearances for uncertified stoves. But he agreed that if I had the manual and could show the stove matched the manual then he could use the clearance ratings of the manufacturer. We definitely want this inspected and insured. Hopefully there won't be an extra charge but if it is only 25 a year I'll go with it.

If you knock the hood ornament off of your car it doesn't make it a different car. If you have sufficient proof to show the inspector that "yes indeed" this is a 4300 - you should be able to use the numbers in the manual. Just one dudes opinion.

Do cars still have hood ornaments? ;) I mean maybe Jaguar, Rolls Royce, etc. :)
