I used the Energex hardwood for a # of years and liked them but one year they were really dirty smokey pellets with a green flame.....
I went back with the NEWP hardwoods then switched last year to the NEWP softwood which are pinnacle.......... And I love the softwood pellets now....
As far as btu comparison with pellets they are similar with cordwood it is not...That is tough for most here in New England to get over burning softwood rather than hardwood But it is pellets we are talking about............

Obvious newbie here so I apologize if I sound really stupid.
We are not sure what to look for or expect in wood pellets other than the
dealer saying to look for low ash. I am trying a couple of bags of the NE softwoods but
is harder to find around my area. I have noticed alot of places selling Narragansett, Energex,
and Ambiance and am curious to opinions.

All you need to know is premium vs standard grade....(this is the ash content) The hardwood vs softwood get what is cheaper you will only notice a small difference in BTU and ash the HW will clinker a little more but that is about all....
The ambiance (by Valfei??) SUCK at least they used to..
Opinions can be misleading..... All pellets change from year to year so it is always best to buy a couple bags and try before you buy......Hope this helps...

We have burned almost all brands of pellet stoves and we have found the softwood is better than hardwood. Softwood has higher BTU and tends to be a much cleaner burning pellet for us over the years. I think softwood is a tough sell because it is harder to find then hardwood and the fact that in real wood burning hardwood is better than softwood
